Well whaddya know: Netflix changes it's mind about splitting
my wife's email | 10/10/11 | Netflix

Posted on 10/10/2011 11:07:24 AM PDT by hoagy62

My wife just received the following email...

Dear xxxxxxx,

It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs.

This means no change: one website, one account, one password…in other words, no Qwikster.

While the July price change was necessary, we are now done with price changes.

The email goes on to advertise what neat things they now offer, etc. etc.

Looks like the feedback from the general public caused someone high up in the ranks at Netflix to go "Oopsie!" and reverse their idiotic move.

It seems someone was listening....

Netflix is making a lot of missteps lately.

First, they tried to raise their price, thinking the customers wouldn’t mind. WRONG! There was a huge outcry.

Now this. Sheesh.

I’m sure they sweated blood in deciding to write this email, but better take it in the chops now and change course back to sanity, than pursue madness to total destruction.

it’s a shame more organizations can’t find the courage to face that same, inevitable solution to their self-maintained suicidal paths.

Oh well - with some students, you have to begin with the very first concept that learning is not optional.

It can be a messy lesson. : )

What is the biggest lesson from all of this, aside from the obvious?

The idiot who had cybersquatted on the @qwickster Twitter name and demanded more and more money to turn it over to Netflix should have taken the first big check offered and shut the heck up. Now, he's got bupkis except an interesting story about the big payday that got away - oh, and a cool Twitter acount under the name @qwickster.

Dish Network has Blockbuster Online and you get movies by mail that you can also swap out at your local blockbuster (if you still have one).

I dropped netflix and went with blockbuster. Plus for gamers you can get games as well!

I think people really over-reacted to this whole Netflix thing. So what, they raise their prices, everybody does. Everything is going up, gas, food, electricity. Yet when Netflix raises their prices people go ballistic. There was so much hateful and irrational behavior it was embarrasing to see.

Netflix has ALWAYS given me excellent customer service, and I have never had a problem with them. I once rec’d a damaged disc and they bent over backwards to make me happy.

Just my two cents.

Netflix is so tone deaf you would think they were bucking for a job with the Obama administration.

Netflix changes it's mind about splitting

You should change your mind about the unnecessary apostrophe in "it's." Just sayin' . . . .

They went into hypershock when they saw how many subscribers were either canceling their membership or going with streaming only. The reaction to the price hike was not what they expected - and they are learning that us long time Netflix subscribers now have several other choices that are just as good or better.

I just got my email also.

All I can think is that the kids are loose in the boardroom at netflix. I’ve gotten three incoherent, contradictory emails from them, which just give the general feeling of complete incompetence.

First an insane price hike. Then some strange apology for upsetting me with their insane price hike, along with the weird solution of cutting their company in two, as if I am too stupid to notice I will be paying twice as much if they just confuse me enough. Then today’s email, saying oops that was a crazy idea and just forget we ever said it. But they aren’t taking the price hike back.

Geez. Idiots.

This debacle will take its place in marketing history, right next to New Coke.

Given the analysis I’ve read, it looks like the split was being done in order to force costs down, thereby reducing prices. The loss of convenience, however, was one that people are just not willing to put up with, so they’ve canned the idea. Maybe it would’ve helped? I don’t know. The film/TV companies are charging an arm and a leg no matter who you go with. Regardless of the delivery system, they control the product and the price.

“Looks like the feedback from the general public caused someone high up in the ranks at Netflix to go “Oopsie!” and reverse their idiotic move.”

Yeah, that and the fact that their stock tanked big time as a result of folks fleeing Netflix due to the price increase followed by the utter insanity of the Quiwkster announcement.

No the split was to cofuse the issue. Having 2 seperate websites and expense would not have cut costs at all.

You would think they'd have learned something from the last time.

A few years ago they tried doing away with the separate queues for customers with multiple DVD plans.

One day, they just announced that they were doing away with separate queues and merging all queues into the primary account holder queue. They didn't poll their customers or do market analysis, they just decided to do it.

Two weeks later, they back-tracked and announced that they were keeping the separate family queues.
