That's the first thing I noticed. Borrowing that much money in relation to your annual income should be reserved for buying an asset with a stable value: like a house.
In public schools, a master's degree doesn't give you enough of a bump in pay to justify the additional money -- if you remain teaching. If you want to advance into administration (and higher pay), you'll need it, but you should be doing that AFTER you have a job that pays your living expenses.
I agree with your point about dental insurance: the dentist probably offers it at cost to employees. But, given the comment about sexual harassment, she probably doesn't want to go that route.
If she had a math teacher like Herman Cain, she would ace the classes...
I’m in Portland on business, and Occupy Portland is about 3 blocks from my hotel. I wandered over there late this afternoon to see what was going on. I surveyed Portland’s tent city, which covers two small block-sized parks. The two parks are separated by Main Street, which Occupy Portland has blocked off. This of course is a bone of contention with local commuters, emergency personnel, and the police department.
While wandering around, I was attracted to a group of 15 or 20 people seated on the ground, holding a discussion. I eavesdropped for a while and then joined the group, which turned out to be the Radical (Anti-Capitalist) Caucus of Occupy Portland. The main topic of discussion was their “list of grievances”, the highlight of which was that that police, by maintaining security at the campground overnight, were disturbing the sleep of the occupants, supposedly as an act of intentional sleep deprivation. A second topic was the desire to show solidarity with the local homeless population, who were apparently being denied the same camping rights as the Occupy Portland crowd. One naif suggested that they ought to invite the drunk and drugged out homeless people to participate in the Radical Caucus meetings — as if there wasn’t already enough mental illness in the group.
Once they had agreed on their grievances, they moved on to decide on a collection of workshops they were going to present to the greater Occupy Portland community to bring everyone up to speed on the major issues of concern to the anti-capitalist caucus. These issues included the historical mistreatment of the native population, the critical value of labor unions, the fear of police among the queer and transgendered population, etc., etc. I couldn’t help think of that skit from Monty Python’s Life of Brian. When one woman recommended using “they” instead of “he or she” in order not to offend some segment of the LGBTQXYZ population, I almost cracked up.
Once this meeting ended, I stayed around for a few minutes of the General Assembly, but couldn’t take it anymore. Two hours later, as I check into the live stream of the meeting, they’re still going through that weird back-and-forth chant trying to decide whether they’re going to give Main Street back to the community.

The young lady with the sign just chose the wrong major in school. Teachers are kind of like lawyers right now, we have way more than we need or could ever use.
As to the rest of her problems, I would suggest searching for a new job while she is still employed; and when she finds one , quit.
On a personal note, Winchester looks like he intends to make your life a living hell (but fun) for the foreseeable future, just like my Jack does for me.
I’ve got no sympathy for these college-educated fools. My best friend dropped out of school at 16 and got a GED. He worked burger-flipping jobs for a few years, saved his money, and used it to pay for night classes at a local technical institute (computer repair). Now he owns his own computer repair business, and his services are in high demand. He’s not even 30 years old, and he already owns his own home that’s bought and paid for. And with no student loans hanging around his neck. He is a classic example of the 53%. So the Occupy Wall Street morons can take their worthless degrees in Sociology or Anthropology and eat them!

That’s not true anymore since construction, research investment and consumer spending is way down.
I tutor kids that often go on to finish degrees in engineering and they frequently call me looking for positions. In almost the last 1-2 years, I could not even refer a single entry-engineer. My old firm had 3 firings, 2 layoffs and one new open (mid level) position in the last year. And they are doing better than about 90% of other firms I keep in touch with. Many firms have stripped their staff bare and are doing 32 hour weeks or mandatory ‘vacations’ to stay alive with minimum staff.
I know talented kids that haven’t received a single offer in almost a year. Many that did started off with below average pay. Most that get a good start do it by family connections rather than talent.
So many kids with no real future and very sad...
If I had no solid job connections and had to take loans, I would NOT pursue my engineering degree today. You will simply be a slave to a mortgage-sized loan and get abused in the job market.
Teachers with a math, science, sped specialty have a better chance of hire; especially if they haven’t climbed to high on the pay scale and are still w/o a master’s.
Some towns/cities are so desperate for science teachers, they are recruiting from the private sector, waiving ed degrees in lieu of work experience. From what I’ve observed, these people last no more than a couple of years and then return, if they can, to private sector. They go into teaching b/c they have a preconceived notion it is *easy.*

Eighty thousand in student loans? Why?
I borrowed $6,700 to get my BS. For the remaining costs, I got a few grants, but mostly paid the tuition and books each semester. After that, I applied for and received various fellowships, teaching assistantships, and grants to pay for my PhD (tuition and stipend) from a very good school.
It took a couple years to pay off that loan.
As far as her working conditions... well, I hate to say it, but she’s not the victim of anyone. Sexual harassment is actionable; besides that, she can look for another job. And the fact that her boss bought two motorcycles suggests to me that he’s feeling the pinch of the bad economy. My car gets ~24 mpg; my motorcycle gets ~80 mpg. Plus, the motorcycle insurance and maintenance are cheap.
What, exactly, is that 99% of, anyway? The 99% of the OWS protesters who have no clue?
