Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani maintains his status as the most-preferred nominee among Republican primary voters nationwide, a new CBS News poll finds. But six in ten of his backers say they have reservations about the candidate.
Twenty-nine percent of Republican primary voters favor Giuliani, while 21 percent support former Senator Fred Thompson. Senator John McCain's support remains at 18 percent, the same as last month, while former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney receives 12 percent support. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, included in the choices in the poll for the first time, garners 4 percent support.

This poll was conducted among a random sample of 1282 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone October 12-16, 2007.

While nothing is inevitable, does Herman Cains’ support seem shaky to anyone?
Yes. The only one who has polled over 30% is Perry. He has 15 million and Cain has nothing. Cain is the guy who everyone jumped to when Perry looked like crap in the debates. If Perry rights the ship, Cain will lose his support.

Um....that’s going to be hard. People want to see him do it the same way he blew it. In debates. Unrehearsed. He’s proven over and over again that that just isn’t him. You put this; “Is it the Mitt Romney that was on the side of — against the Second Amendment before he was for the Second Amendment? Was it — was before — he was before the social programs from the standpoint of — he was for standing up for Roe v. Wade before he was against first — Roe v. Wade?” Up against Obama on national tv and he will lose by twice what Mcain lost by. It would look like a petulant teenager beating up a seven year old and NO ONE wants to see that.
Now he sends his wife out to deny reality saying that he’s losing because his religion is being attacked? What kind of whiny BS is that? No one is attacking him over his religion. No one. Unless his religion makes him sound idiotic.
And I believe it is that kind of straw man bullcrap that will have him out of the race before S. Carolina....or very, very shortly after.
Whining about the unfair media is not what is needed. Forcefully taking it to the media and Romney is.
I haven't counted him out, but he is rapidly running out of time for corrective action.
Yeah, that has been the one consistent tread of the Perry campaign and his supporters on FR - an unwillingness to realize that Perry's problems are largely of his own making.
And until that changes, Perry ain't getting traction.

No. It demonstrates that the only polls that matter are the ones for Iowa and New Hampshire. Huckabee became a front runner nationally after he won the Iowa caucus and then McCain became the front runner after he won the New Hampshire primary. Candidates can’t sustain leads in late voting states if they don’t win early.
Well, I do disagree with you. I think Perry has just begun the fight. He has gotten the negatives out in front from the get-go. He is getting ready to unveil his economic plan, and spent Friday talking about his energy plan. He has big ads coming out against Obama. He is playing this for the long haul.
His debate performances will improve & when people see him outside of that arena - he does very well.
I think that if he were to become president - he is the most qualified to implement REAL solutions to our unprotected borders and how to deal with the illegal problem. Texas has had to deal with those problems the way that they felt was best - considering the Federal government has tied their hands on solutions. As president - Perry will untie the state’s hands. Unlike how he is portrayed by many of his enemies - he will know what to do to solve the problem better than any other candidate out there right now.
This is why he is the Target #1 - the left is deathly afraid of him.

That ship is at the bottom of the ocean. Most people didn’t know Perry before and now that they know him they’ve decided that they don’t like him.
At this point Perry can only serve to hand Romney the nomination by taking votes away from Cain.
Do not get me wrong, I believe that Perry over all would be a decent POTUS, or at least better than what we have now. I doubt his ability to get there.
If he cannot explain his economic plans et al to the nation, in a debate, on national tv and have it be simple, easy to understand and short, then I fail to see how he is going to rebound.
The good news for him is that he still leads in some states. That bad news for him is that most of those states vote later in the primary season. While Cain and Romney have solid leads in the earlier states.
Close your eyes for a moment and imagine Cain or even the dreaded Myth debating Obama. They’d both do well, even if we do not want Myth as POTUS, we know he’d do well.

A nice way of saying that he is smarter than he sounds. I agree that he probably is. He’d have to be.
I have never watched a Rick Perry speech. I have watched his abyssmal debates. I am not sure I could stomache a whole speech of him sounding like that.
I implore you, please watch the speech. I will even get you the link if you will watch it.
Well I got a couple hours this morning before the game comes on. So if he puts me to sleep, I shouldn’t miss anything. I will watch it but I must warn you; I am not changing my mind or my support from Cain.
The speech can be all great and everything but even Obama sounds good speechifyin’.
It’s the debates, where you have to think on your feet that will sway people.
That’s fine. It’s 24 minutes long. I don’t ask you to change from Cain. Just watch it and critique.

Ok I take back one thing I said about Perry before. He actually CAN string three sentences together without sounding like a moron.
Now if he can do that in a debate setting, AND people forget that he thinks we are heartless bigots if we disagree with him on people “with different sounding last names” getting to participate in programs that only U.S. citizens should...he could make a come-back. Time is flying by however.
