Conn. lawmaker wants Halloween date change

HARTFORD, Conn., Oct. 24 (UPI) -- A Connecticut lawmaker says he wants to change the traditional Oct. 31 date of Halloween to the last Saturday of the month for safety and other reasons.

The change would make the holiday easier for working parents, safer for trick-or-treaters and would boost the economy as well, state Rep. Tim Larson said.

"Halloween is [a] fun night for the whole family, but not so much when you have to race home from work, get the kids ready for trick or treating, welcome the neighborhood children, and then try to get everyone to bed for an early school and work morning," Larson, a Democrat, told the Hartford Courant Monday.

Sure, all u gotta do is convince the Catholic Church to move All Saints Day to the Sunday following the final Saturday in October and we’re all set.

What a moron.

I know I know. The guy is a Democrat but I agree with this. My wife and I go to a Halloween Party every year and it is held the Saturday before Halloween or two Saturdays before. In fact, we just attended it this past Saturday. Having it during the week really isn’t fun for anyone. The kids get all this candy and immediately have to go to bed. A Friday or Saturday night would be the best I believe.

You OBVIOUSLY don’t have kids. Otherwise you would think this is a great idea. I know you aren’t invited to parties but if you were would you have it on a Monday night just because it is Halloween. I think you are off your rocker. All Saints Day is fine on the first of November.

Let's also pass a law so that it never rains, or isn't too cold and it's not too dark. That would make it safer and easier as well.

Let's move Christmas to June. It's too cold and dangerous driving to everyones house in the snow.

That is not even remotely close to the situation. How about we make Halloween a holiday than fine have it the exact day. give the following day off too so everyone enjoys it. That is Christmas!!!!!

For Conn. it might be best to move it to Dec. 31st. The kids are out of school, it’s a$$ freezing cold which should reduce the number of kids out there which should make it safer, and you could hand out ice cubes colored with food dye which would be healthier, non-fattening and PC. Best of all, it would put Conn. into the ultra elite group of states that are known for forging new pathways in stupidity.

Then everyone could feel better about their weight.

HOW about the government STAY OUT OF HOLIDAY dates, like they should every thing else....and in fact revert BACK to the REAL dates, like the REAL Washington and Lincoln Birthdays, the REAL Veterans Day, etc....the ONLY reason people want them on Monday’s or whatever is for THEIR convenience (and holiday pay)....next thing you know Christmas will ALWAYS be on SUNDAY.

You OBVIOUSLY don’t have kids.

Have four children.

Otherwise you would think this is a great idea.

Nope, it's dumb and a further erosion of Western and American tradition.

I know you aren’t invited to parties

OMG how did you know!? (Commence sobbing)

but if you were would you have it on a Monday night just because it is Halloween.

Have your party whenever but Halloween will always be on Halloween.

I think you are off your rocker.

You're right, at 6'6" and 275 lbs. I broke the last rocker I owned.

All Saints Day is fine on the first of November.

The pope is much relieved he doesn't have to change the calendar to accomodate your parties.

One more thing, consider this for your costume this year:

This is NOTHING. In my world, the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission decides when Halloween is. This year it waries from the 27th to the 31st depending on municipality.

I've lived here for 20 years, and this is the one "local" idiocy I have fought with fervor all that time. Halloween is October 31. Period.

I'll do you one better. Where I live (Taylorville, IL) the town geniuses have declared Holloween to be observed on TWO nights (30th and 31st). Boy, isn't that special? Now I get to worry about vandalism and keeping pets indoors for TWO nights instead of one.

Unreal. When I was a kid 40 years ago it was October 31, with no time restrictions until midnight (if a house didn’t want to play, or was out of treats the porch light was out.) We and the town survived just fine.

That would cause problems when they move January 1 to fall on Monday for another 3 day weekend. (/s)

Okey Dokey, did you realize that Halloween is not an official holiday and you can observe it any day you choose?

Let’s see how we need to change our calender of holidays.

New Year’s has to stay on the 1st.

Valentine’s day will be the nearest Saturday to the 14th for romantic dates.

St. Patrick’s will also be on a Saturday so you can recover from your hangover on Sunday and the Corned Beef and Cabbage menu will not interfere with Lent.

Easter can remain as is since it is already on the weekend.

The 4th of July...well, it is the the 4th of July so unless we also rename it and rewrite history then it should remain the 4th of July.

Thanksgiving...why the heck is it on a Thursday anyway?...so federal workers can get a 4 day holiday?

Christmas, well, people already want to call it Winter Holiday so let’s just get realistic and call it Winter break because if we leave Jesus out then there is no reason for a holiday.

You know you could always make your own holiday for any day you want, just because All Hallow’s Eve is a religious festival doesn’t mean you couldn’t start your own secular Scary Dress-up Day and you can choose any day that you want. You can buy all the candy you want and if you are as popular as you seem to think, you’ll have lots of friends joining in.

and of course my favourite- GWAR in detroit, which is always the saturday before halloween.

If you were a kid, you would want Halloween moved. When I was a kid, the Baton Rouge area would move Halloween to Friday if it fell on LSU football home game Saturday night. So I got to trick or treet in my own hood on Friday and then go to my cousins' on Saturday and go out again. Yay!
