I want to make sure I’m at or about 730+ before refinancing.

Can’t tell if I am. reading those are like reading the VIN plate on a car...means nothing if you don’t know the codes and secret handshake.

We bought a new car last year, for cash. The dealer's finance guy still ran our credit report for the hell of it, and gave us the number.

If you know anybody in that business, give 'em a call....the only info required is your name, address and Drivers License number IIRC.

The only negative I found was some jackwagon book club who claims I ordered a book and that I didn’t pay.

I already asked them and Experian (in writing) to remove it as it’s wrong, but they never did. A buddy of mine who works in the biz says to just pay them their extortion $ and send proof to the credit gods to atone for my alleged sin.

Is it true that checking your credit score too often can harm your credit score?

I'm not sure about the details. Having your credit checked too often is a minor negative (i.e. It makes it look like you are about to add lots of debt.) Unsolicited checks of your credit (by credit card companies with pre-approved offers) does not impact your credit. I don't know about personally checking your credit.

I have the three companies set on my calendar 4 months apart. I check each one once per year. (Not a score, but only credit history.)

I've had my credit union tell me my score before. I'm not sure what their policies or rules are. (i.e. I'm considering refinancing, what does it look like? What kind of rate will you give me? Etc.)

If you have a 5+ years of credit history, and don't have any delinquent accounts in the past year, you should be fine.

But, go ahead and get your credit score. Go to someplace like Equifax.com or Experian.com and get it directly from the reporting agency.

No, you don't ask them to remove it.

You tell them that it is wrong, and demand that they verify it. The responsibility to prove it is valid is Experian's, not yours.

If the book club still claims you owe, then you demand that the book club produce a contract with your signature on it that obligates you to pay.

You have to read the mico-print really, really fast at the bottom of those FreeCreditReport.com ads at the end of the ad.

From my understanding, you’ll need to tell all 3 agencies (assuming the book club error appears on all three reports) that you dispute it. They will give the book club a certain amount of time to respond to their inquiry (3 or 6 months, I think) and if they don’t respond (which most places don’t, too time consuming), it will be removed.

I found out by accident that the motherless freak bloodsuckers who collect taxes in CA entered a tax lien
against me for property I sold years ago. Since I was
a WA resident at the time and could prove it I owed CA squat and was able to get the lien quashed.

Now I religiously check my credit a couple times a year through Chase to make sure they

1. don’t have bogus info and
2. dispute negative info with creditors.

This could be a very bad thing for your credit! You want to write to the credit agencies again, stating that this is an incorrect entry. By paying the creditor, especially if you didn't owe it, will pretty much guarantee that you'll have a "late pay" note on your credit report for the next 7 years, starting at the date the creditor reports the payment. If you don't owe it, you need to write to all three agencies, and dispute it.

Credit companies WANT to remove "dings" you don't deserve. They can be sued huge amounts of money if they're wrong and you can show you've disputed it.

https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp is where you really want to go. The Big Three credit agencies are required by law to give you one free credit report per year per company, no strings attached; this site is their portal for doing so.

A good mortgage lender can pull your score for free. If the score is there; you can just go forward then if you are ready. Even if below 730, it still might not affect things depending on loan to value; loan program etc...

A rate term refi should be ok down to 720 at a 80% lTV.

A lower LTV would probably give even more room if the score was lower

It is “free” for a month then they hit you with recurring charges (somewhere in the neighborhood of $20 per month).

My wife used to work in a credit union call center. She said that she spent half of her working time canceling payments to these services for members.
