Mozilla's rapid release train has pulled into the station on time, with the fifth major Firefox browser release of 2011. Firefox 8 is being released today, providing developers with new capabilities and offering users more security via a new add-ons policy.
"We're proud of the way Firefox continues to move the web forward in this release," Gavin Sharp, Firefox engineer and the Firefox module owner told InternetNews.com. "Our support for Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) in WebGL lets developers build incredible 3D experiences on the Web in a secure way."
Sharp noted that Firefox 8 also introduces a simpler way for HTML5 applications to provide a right-click menu, to provide a more complete experience. He explained that this release of Firefox introduces better support for Web applications, allowing them to provide context menu options without requiring complicated custom code.
"Adding this functionality to HTML will make adding custom context menus options easier for Web developers and more consistent and reliable for Web app users," Sharp said.
From a safety and security perspective, Mozilla is taking aim at third party add-ons with Firefox 8. On startup, Firefox 8 provides users with a menu with third party plugins disabled, offering users the choice of re-enabling them if they so choose. Sharp explained that in Firefox 8, add-ons can still be installed by third party programs, as in previous versions of Firefox.
"What's new in this next release of Firefox is that Firefox will notify users when this happens and get explicit permission before enabling them," Sharp said. "On upgrade, we will also prompt users to offer the option of disabling existing add-ons that the user may not have been aware of. We want users to be in control of their browser, and to avoid add-on surprises."
Firefox 8 also provides at least six security updates over the Firefox 7 release, with three updates identified by Mozilla as being critical. The three critical flaws include what Mozilla describes as, Miscellaneous memory safety hazards, memory corruption while profiling Firebug and a code execution via a NoWaiverWrapper issue.
Mozilla's first rapid release was the Firefox 5 browser which debuted in June. Since then, Mozilla has been releasing new Firefox browsers at a faster rate than ever before with Firefox 6 out in August and Firefox 7 in late September. Prior to the Firefox 5 release, new major browser releases often came a year or more apart.
"The new release process lets us deliver new features and improvements to our users faster than ever before," Sharp said. "We monitor the way the release cycle impacts our users, as well as the ecosystem of add-ons, plugins and other 3rd party software that interacts with Firefox, and we're making changes where needed."
What browser and Windows version are you using?
The only pop-ups I get are new configurations that circumvent the newest browsers.
I use an old IE 6 based browser for FR. It is one of the earliest tabbed browsers and it has some edit/add-ons that no longer exist for later versions. I also use FF5 and 7 for general surfing and seldom have a pop-up problem with those.
There may be come configuration settings you can adjust in your browser to stop those pop-ups.
Funny you mention that. I've thought in the past it should be:
I like it!
But it’s racist... LOL!
Had to uninstall Firefox. It was getting hung up, etc...
Too many issues and not sure if it was my Add ons?
At any rate using primarly the latest Internet Explorer and Google Chrome. Waiting for Firefox to resolve their issues.
The new IE 9.0 64 bit additon is pretty good. Takes a little bit to get use to. It is fast and a big improvement from the past.
400 MB, I guess.
I am running FF7 on a laptop with 256 MB total RAM. Works OK, for a few tabs although 192 wasn't enough and had to upgrade.
F.R. is the only place where I get a pop up.
Also running v. 3.6.23 (now security update to 3.6.24).
I presume you have the popup-blocker box checked (Tools, Options, Content tab). I have disabled NoScript and Adblock plus for FR and don’t have issues with popups on FR at all.
Would unchecking this box: "Tools, Options, Privacy, History, Remember search and form history" accomplish the same thing?
Are you referring to donate ads that show up within individual threads?? Other than those I have no other ads that appear as pop-ups on FR.
I’ve never had a popup on FR. Firefox with ad block plus.
Sometimes I get too techy for my own good. :)
I used Firefox ever since it started but finally gave up on it 3 weeks ago because of the memory hogging issues. 2 years and still it eats memory like breakfast cereal.
I tried Chrome and it works so much faster and so little memory. Set up was easy and it imported my favorites.
I was getting as much as 500 MB usage on Firefox. It was killing everthing on the computer. I finally switched 3 weeks ago to Chrome and haven’t had an issue since.
Chrome = Google = web tracking??
they fixed the memory issues in firefox with version 7 released 27 September 2011
There must be more than one issue then. If I want to be sure my old xp desktop is frozen up when I want to use it, I just have to be sure Firefox is open when I walk away.
Not for me, it didn’t. Every new release, it got worse.
No. I am referring to a new window that opens while I'm on F.R. It is the "Donate now" form.
Other than those I have no other ads that appear as pop-ups on FR.
No windows open up automatically for me on any other site, except F.R.
I’m using 7.01. It seems to have stopped most of the memory leak problems I was having with the previous versions.
See my #27. Assuming you’re using at least V 3.6 FF and if you have the popup blocker box checked you shouldn’t have a problem. Two more things I’d suggest are:
1)Go to “Account” and under “Windows” click “Blank” (my setting; shouldn’t have any effect but there are some minor bugs in the software), and
2)Logout and log back in FR (remember your password). It may reset any glitches.
Let us know if your problem is solved.
