Here's some reactions from around Centre County to news of Joe Paterno's decision to retire at the end of this season.

From Fran Fisher, who said he's "a good friend" with Joe and Sue Paterno and started in the Penn State radio network the first year Paterno became head coach: "It's a difficult thing to think that his retirement is the result of a circumstance that is not appropriate to defining his career."

It’s just mind boggling that in this day and age, someone in his position would say nothing, and then continue to be a friend to this man he knows is a pedophile.

A result of defining deviancy down, I guess.

The "New Morality" is the old immorality. The homosexual agenda embraces deviancy of all forms under the umbrella of tolerance and diversity.

It’s just mind-boggling that you think Paterno is a pedophile.

What I find amazing is that he is announcing when he is leaving Penn State. The trustees are now meeting to decide whether or not he should be fired and forced to leave immediately, not the end of the season. He, the president of the university, and others were legally obligated to report this to the police. They didn’t. They didn’t report this as a crime statistic for the campus. They were required to do so. Paterno has the arrogance to think that he can tell the trustees when he will leave. They ought to remind him who’s boss and fire him by the end of the week at the very latest.

I wonder, though, and I’m not defending Joe, but how does a 70 year old man process what Mcqueary told him, especially if he gave him a vague description of what he saw? I’d bet he looked at McQueary and thought to himself, “What the h_ll is this guy talking about?”

Considering how Joe Paterno has acted since at least 1998, I believe it is not beyond the realm of possibility. This is a guy who would not have his picture taken with a Penthouse Pet (fully clothed) upon her request in a TV studio where there paths crossed, but when notified of a 10 year old boy being raped in his showers, he shows no urgency in the least. My life experience has shown me that these holier than thou personalities usually have a dark side. Normal guy smiles and gets his picture taken in the first instance, and calls the police pronto in the second. Creepy guy does the opposite.

...if he gave him a vague description of what he saw?

According to the indictment, McQuery's description of what he saw is that the accused was engaged in anal intercourse with a boy about 10 years of age. McQuery notified JoePa the next day that this is what he witnessed, according to the indictment. Doesn't sound "vague" to me.

Excuse me but as a 71 year-old male I resent the implication that Joe didn’t know what he heard and didn’t know immediately what he should do. Age had nothing to do with it. Power and protecting a reputation, his and the “program”, were what he thought of first. He couldn’t nail Sandusky without blowback and he chose not to do it.

The cover-up is sometimes worse than the act... although not in this case.

Any power structure that’s 46 years old tends to make these kind of serious errors. Joe should have blown it up 15 years ago and resigned then.

“...when notified of a 10 year old boy being raped in his showers, he shows no urgency in the least.”

I think that’s the rub. I do not know exactly what was said or how it was described to Mr. Paterno.
If the graduate assistant came and said, “I saw Mr. Sanduski taking a shower with a kid in the locker
room and they were horsing around in an inappropriate way” - well that is far different than if he
said “I saw Mr. Sanduski raping a kid in the shower”.

I don’t know what he “knew” or how it was communicated. I suspect we will learn more and I will
give him the benefit of the doubt until that time.

A naked 60 year old man and a naked 10 year old boy horsing around in the football locker room showers at 9:30PM on a Friday night I believe reaches the threshold for a 911 call.

Good thought. Nothing bad about a 54 year old man horseing around with a ten year old in an inappropriate way in the middle of the night in Joe's locker room. Happens all the time. Now good night. We can all go back to bed.

I am 65 and I will tell you how I would process it.

Son, please tell me slowly exactly what you saw and I will take notes. Next, we call 911 to report the rape.

Well, like I said, I will wait for details about what was communicated.

Here is what his statement said...

"As my grand jury testimony stated, I was informed in 2002 by an assistant coach that he had witnessed an incident in the shower of our locker room facility. It was obvious that the witness was distraught over what he saw, but he at no time related to me the very specific actions contained in the Grand Jury report. Regardless, it was clear that the witness saw something inappropriate involving Mr. Sandusky. As Coach Sandusky was retired from our coaching staff at that time, I referred the matter to university administrators.

Since grand jury testimony is under oath, the consequences of lying are a felony charge.
I'm sure Paterno knew that. So, unless he lied under oath intentionally, I will take him at his word
until more info comes out.

You are free to do whatever you wish.

You are so right. Some of Joe’s defenders act like JoePa was a middle age guy in 1860’s and 1870’s instead of the 1960’s and 70’s.

I am free to read the report and notice that you left out the part about where Paterno testified 'fondling or doing something of a sexual nature to a boy'.

Are you also aware that a few years ago Joe was involved in a 'road rage' incident. He told the police and reporters he never got out of the car. Later (having forgot what he told the police) he told a group that he got out of the car. Better to take Joe's words with a grain of salt. Maybe the guy is lying or maybe he is just senile.

BTW, did you catch the part where Joe said "if the charges are true .."? Give me a break. Joe knows.

Did you miss Joe’s statement:

“I wish I had done more.”

No sense saying Joe did all was required when Joe is saying publicly that he did not.
