I have a iPad 2, the only problem I see with iOS 5 is that my mail doesn’t download automatically, I have to open the app first. Not really a biggie, just a little bit annoying.

I have not seen any battery problems with my iPad 1 or iPad 2. My wife is a stickler about shutting down services she does not need. I shut down things as needed, such as bluetooth, network access and location services.

Go to Settings, Location Services, System Services, and turn off Location-Based iAds and Setting Time Zone as a start. They drain some battery power. If you have 3G as we do, turn off Cellular Data if you're only using Wi-Fi at the current time. Periodically turn off apps you're not currently using (for Newbies, double-click the large button, and then touch an app at the bottom until you see a red minus sign on it, then select which ones to quit running). All these little things preserve power and make the iPad run longer than expected.
