"Atlas Shrugged" dvd recall
Atlas Shrugged Movie Blog ^ | November 11, 2011 | sdespaio

(Santa Monica), November 11, 2011 - Atlas Productions LLC announced today its plan to replace more than 100,000 title sheets appearing on the Atlas Shrugged Part 1 DVD and Blu-ray versions sold through major retail outlets. These retail versions were packaged with an inaccurate synopsis of Atlas Shrugged. Not affected were the “Special Edition” versions sold online at AtlasShruggedMovie.com.

The 1957 novel, Atlas Shrugged, is known in philosophical and political circles for presenting a cogent argument advocating a society driven by rational self-interest. On the back of the film's retail DVD and Blu-ray however, the movie’s synopsis contradictorily states “AYN RAND’s timeless novel of courage and self-sacrifice comes to life...”

“It’s embarrassing for sure and of course, regardless of how or why it happened, we’re all feeling responsible right now.” says Scott DeSapio, Atlas Productions’ COO and Communications Director “You can imagine how mortified we all were when we saw the DVD but, it was simply too late - the product was already on shelves all over the Country. It was certainly no surprise when the incredulous emails ensued. The irony is inescapable.”

DeSapio continued “Ultimately, the responsibility falls on us, Atlas Productions. We are putting policies in place now to ensure we avoid these types of unforced errors in the future.”

Harmon Kaslow, CEO of Atlas Productions and Producer of the film stated “As we all well know, the ideas brought to life in Atlas Shrugged are entirely antithetical to the idea of ‘self-sacrifice’ as a virtue. Atlas is quite literally a story about the dangers of self-sacrifice.

So did anybody get one of these new "collector's items?"

And how did this even happen anyway? Maybe some lib at the DVD plant changed the text?

“the dangers of self-sacrifice”?

That’s not what the book is about AT ALL. Putting it that way put it at odds with Christianity.

Rational self-interest is not antithetical to self-sacrifice. Otherwise no one would ever willingly go to war.

Looks like they hired a Mouch to write the back page synopsis.

The responsibility does fall on the production company for this.

Here in Hollywood, DVD production companies are EVERYWHERE,and I know for a fact it is normal for each studio to send their reps and be a dictator to have the DVD prodn’ co. do exactly as they are told.

Gut feeling tells me an idiot lib screwed it up intentionally. This is what happens when you a minority conservative in the mental asylum called Hollywood and you place trust on these traitors. That’s why we made sure no Obama ass-kisser gets to be on our payroll.

"Let a man corrupt his values and his view of existence, let him profess that love is not self-enjoyment but self-denial, that virtue consists, not of pride, but of pity or pain or weakness or sacrifice, that the noblest love is born, not of admiration, but of charity, not in response to values, but in response to flaws—and he will have cut himself in two."

"For centuries, the battle of morality was fought between those who claimed that your life belongs to God and those who claimed that it belongs to your neighbors - between those who preached that the good is self-sacrifice for the sake of ghosts in heaven and those who preached that the good is self-sacrifice for the sake of incompetents on earth. And no one came to say that your life belongs to you and that the good is to live it."

Hah! There it is! On the back cover there's this summary:

"AYN RAND'S timeless novel of courage and self-sacrifice comes to life for a new millenium. The year is 2016 and America is on the verge of economic disaster. The greatest citizens are being targeted and dark forces are working to bring about America's final days. Our only hope for salvation lies with Dagny Taggart and Henry Rearden, rugged individualists whose bold ideas may have the power to spark a revolution and reclaim the American Dream."

Yeesh... aside from the wrongness of "self-sacrifice" it really isn't even a very good description of what the story is about. Not close.

Wow. Somewhere there's a copy editor having a really, really bad day.

Yes, the words are wrong on the back of my Blu-ray. Now, I want every other purchaser to trade theirs in, so that I may have a true collector’s item. HaHa.

“Gut feeling tells me an idiot lib screwed it up intentionally.”

I don’t know, back covers are usually pretty slap-dash, with the worst grammar, syntax, and style this side of rap lyrics. I’ve read more than one that got basic facts about the movie—main character’s name, object of plot, setting, etc.—wrong.

“That’s not what the book is about AT ALL. Putting it that way put it at odds with Christianity.”

It being written by Rand put it at odds withy Christianity. She was as clear as can be on her opposition to religious ethics. It’s one of the major reasons people refer to her as a faded facsimile of Nietzsche.

Isn’t there a scene in which a desperate girl leaps into a river to avoid comfort from a nun and/or priest? She shouts something like, “Not your way!” before jumping to her doom. That’s right, Rand would rather kill herself (or at least thinks its plausible for one of her charactersn to) than listen to religion for a few seconds.

If I remember right, it was not to avoid “religion” that the young woman killed herself, it was when she realized that she was being used and lied to by a man she thought loved her.

Nothing to do with religion at all.

Well, I didn’t say that religion was the cause, even proximately. Just that she couldn’t stand to listen to it even for a few seconds, and shouted an anti-religious message on her way to suicide. Let’s leave it up in the air as to whether it pushed her over the top. At best it was just one more thing not to like about life. Maybe she would have killed herself anyway. Nevertheless, you don’t get many more blatant messages in fiction.

Rand doesn’t like religion. Not only is it no way to live your life, nor any comfort: it is something to run away from, even into death.
