Tokyo, November 2, 2011 — RIKEN and Fujitsu today announced that the "K computer(1)," which is a supercomputer currently under their joint development, has achieved a LINPACK(2) benchmark performance of 10.51 petaflops (10.51 quadrillion floating point operations per second).

The supercomputer system used for these tests is in its final configuration of 864 racks, comprising a total of 88,128 interconnected CPUs. With an execution efficiency of 93.2%, this system further exceeds its first place winning performance on the 37th TOP500 list(3) international ranking of supercomputers published in June 2011, where it scored 93.0%.

Although development is still underway to adjust the system software, the K computer achieved the goal of a LINPACK score of 10 petaflops, a performance target set as a national core technology as part of Japan's 3rd Science and Technology Basic Plan.

Notice that USA's biggest super computer (the cray jaguar) is now only at number 3 in the world in terms of computing power. However, of the top 500 supercomputers in the world, 255 of them are in the USA.

Where can I place my order?

Maybe this rig I can finally play Call of Duty: MW3 and Elder Scrolls: Skyrim with a minimum of lag and low frame rates...

I'd be willing to bet that the K Computer won't take 750 million years to compute the answer to a simple question.

Although, it would probably arrive at the same answer. 42.

Me too- I am tempted to take one of my old one (from 2 or 3 years ago) and reformat it to run DOS

It would be cool to see some of my old games running at screaming speed ( F-15 Retailiator was FUN)

I read where it takes 9.9 megawatts to run it.

Memory: 30 quadrillion bytes
Speed: 8.2 billion megaflops

Human being:
Memory: 3.5 quadrillion bytes
Speed: 2.2 billion megaflops.

Anybody know where I could look up silicon wafer production stats by country? There can’t be too many places in the world that produce wafers.

You can start here.... iSuppli....but it really depends on what you consider wafers are used for, big box machines and/or phone and tablet chips.

Thanks.

I don’t care what its used for. I was just curious how many wafers were produced(for all electronics) and where they were produced. I suppose it would be easier to measure it in pounds of monocrystaline silicon cylindrical ingot produced per annum of...say the top ten nations. I have a hunch over 50% of it is produced in north america and at least 25% produced in japan...but I could be wrong.
