My grandmother experienced the same thing.
In her dementia, she kept asking for her daughter, Ardel, who died four years previous. We stopped telling her after the first few times.

One of my favorite phrases used by the BBC came from Lady Thatcher's ability to win debates and one-up her left-wing opponents. Its called being "Hand-bagged".
"Today, Labour was once again hand-bagged by the Thatcher administration and lost a crucial vote in Parliament."
