They are the gun-toting, scripture-spouting, government-hating Texan family who warn anyone daring enough to approach the fencing around their home: 'We fear no man. We believe in an eye for an eye and a bullet for a bullet.'

Led by grandfather John Joe Gray, the tribe of a dozen or so men, women and children have been waging a war against both local sheriffs and federal agencies for an incredible 11 years.

Welcome to America's longest-running police standoff. It shows no signs of ending.

SNIP

They grow their own food and live in a shack and trailer – always wearing holsters, hand-made from animal hide; always carrying weapons

"...have been waging a war against both local sheriffs and federal agencies"

They've been waging a war, have they? By squatting on their property? No shots fired, no deaths, no standoffs...Some war they've got there.

I’m suprised they’ve been left alone. I doubt it would be to hard to snatch the grandpa, especially if he’s been venturing out of the compound like the article claims.

If Janet Reno were still in charge, these “terrorists” would have been barbequed in that trailer, as she did the 28 children in the Waco massacre.

In the mind of the statists who despise freedom from government, anyone who doesn’t bow before Caesar and call him “god” deserves death.

Minus the law problems this sounds like our life in many ways. We are capable of self-sufficiency....It’ll get better once we get milk cows and harvest next years’ garden.

"There's always work to be done," says 31-year-old Jonathan, who is building a log cabin for his wife and children on the property. There are goats to milk, chickens to feed, wood to chop, a garden to cultivate. They work with pistols on their hips and rifles resting nearby.

Electricity is provided by generators, fueled with petroleum brought by sympathizers, who also bring food, clothing, and other items, including an occasional newspaper. With no television, they are tethered to world events by AM, FM and shortwave radio. Three times a week, two of Gray's sons broadcast their own shortwave program called Radio Free Texas.

I wonder how they keep their website up.

Two comments:

1. The Brits print this stuff just to satisfy their own, smug, metrosexual egos.

2. The Gray family sounds like they are pretty much living an organic, non-industrial, back-to-nature lifestyle the left wants to force on the rest of us. I wonder if any OWS people will show up to help them?

The Grays drink well water, eat vegetables grown in their garden and fish in the river that borders the land covered with a canopy of trees. They live in a ramshackle house and a mobile home and often eat at the picnic table far from the road but visible through the trees.

Sounds like the independence mindset of colonial times. No wonder the Brits don’t like it. In America, it’s admirable.

Not a surprising article from a Brit. They should remember a stock of people like this from their history. They ran into a similar bunch at Kings Mountain and Guilford Courthouse.

The daughter is really cute and reminds me of the song “Wolverton Mountain” about a guy named Clifton Cowers. Gotta love this family! I hope they make a movie.

The founders of this nation were not anarchists and did not reject earthly government.

It’s one thing to oppose a tax, it is another thing to not pay a tax lawfully imposed under the Constitution of Texas.

It is also not conservative to make your own drivers licenses and license plates, when the Constitution and laws of the State of Texas give that authority to the legislature and designated agencies of the executive. Nor is it conservative to not appear in a lawful court, obey lawful court orders and deny a father the right to visit his children without just cause.

In the initial incident, it sounds likely that the trooper was getting in touch with his inner facist, and the grandfather resisted and then failed to show up for his court date. Now it appears that the grandfather has put himself under permanent house arrest, which costs taxpayrs exactly nothing.

Contrast this with the lawlessness of the OWS crowd and those who live in the inner-cities of places such as Chicago or Dallas. As long as inner-city crimes rates are what they are, leftist mobs are breaking the law in serious ways with near impunity, and government at all levels is behaving lawlessly, there is no rational or moral reason for using tax dollars to go after the elderly fellow.
