Report cards out again, and, yes, I'm complaining again (vanity)
Me

Posted on 11/18/2011 1:45:25 AM PST by MacMattico

So my student gets the report card today and quite frankly expects her high 90 gpa to continue. All of the grades I've seen have been high. She wanted to keep her average, each quarter, above a 90 to receive a special award at the end of the year for never having a quarterly average below 90 in the past 4 years. It's a big deal to the kids, I know it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things, but it's important to them.

Two years ago, I found grading errors (averaging and such) and had to complain all the way up the chain to have that fixed. Last year, they didn't want her in honor society, probably I've learned because Mom knows their flaws and isn't quiet about it. There were also grading errors.

First quarter this year, she receives an average of 89.9. No rounding up. So out of honor society, no award at the end of the year, overall average down.

Now I feel it's personal against me and not her. The teachers I know and know her well--all high averages. Math and Science, where they placed her in a different sequence from last year-- low 80's, and she was telling me all quarter how easy the math was (and I saw at least two 95 exam grades). They had to keep a journal in math all quarter and on the last day of the quarter were asked to hand them in. He would not accept hers because it wasn't in one of those marble notebooks! All the papers, dated each day, stapled in order, but 0 credit! Science was said to be somewhat "subjective in his lab grading". Subjective science?? These two teachers have been there a while and I swear they rigged this to punish us for speaking up!

Am I paranoid or what? I was warned to keep quiet by some parents who said that would help her grades stay up. I've also been contacted by three teachers that "wish to remain anonymous" that told me I'd be shocked if I knew what went on in terms of grading and comments made about students (as in young girls) behind closed doors. I have no way to leave this district, btw.

Some things just have to be left in The Lord's hands.

Head butting a few brick walls in my life have taught me that.

Have you considered having a personal chat with each teacher alone in a very private and unexpected place? (no witnesses, no marks)

Next stage in game… Colleges are full of liberal professors where conservative students get hammered when they oppose their view.

Depending on how determined you are, file a formal complaint, get an attorney, hire a PI to investigate the suspect teachers ... or home school.

And my daughter is one conservative girl... But at least she’ll be an adult and I hope she can stand up for herself, like I had to do in college. Although I’ll admit to writing some liberal garbage in a pinch to keep my grades up.

Maybe your kid is just not working hard enough and you are too much of a helicopter Mom?

Last year I told the Principal I was going to the Superintendent and Board of Education. All of a sudden a “mistake” was found that was “fixed”, but I feel like they've prepared for me this year. Her low grades came from two teachers that have been there forever, one she mentions being afraid of and after he made another girl cry over who knows what, my daughter saw this teacher and another male teacher that she had and really liked, screaming at each other in hall after school, but they stopped when they saw her and she couldn't hear what they said.

Maybe. But it's interesting that in every class but two she receives high 90’s and even at the 5 week point had 90’s in these classes. Five weeks later these grades from teachers with questionable pasts suddenly drop to the exact point where she gets an 89 instead of 90 which takes her out of honors, etc

Rule #1.... Life is not fair

Improvise, adapt and overcome is the best way to handle life.

Anyone someone challengers the system... it is almost an always guaranteed loss. You have to understand the nature of the “Beast” and then decide if it's worth the battle. Pick and choose your battles carefully and always think of what it will cost you if you lose. If you win will it be worth all the effort?

I don't think you are paranoid and yes the teachers are punishing you. You can never prove it, but I believe you are correct.

Is this a public school?
If I were raising children again and had no option to homeschool I'd need a straitjacket. I sympathize with you

My son was an honors student for 4 straight years. He compiled A grades and above for all 4 years of high school including AP courses and was ranked third in a class of 365 students. . What a kick in his teeth to him it was to get a B grade in Fizz Ed on the last report card of his senior year.

Get your DAUGHTER to go in and fight for that extra 0.1%.
Students who put in that effort usually succeed. Focus on objective questioning of each point.
Don’t let her just sit there and take it.

But SHE is the one who must do it, not you. You can aid and guide her, but don’t do it instead of her.

Go to the school board. They are elected, and won’t like the press.

Not once in my adult life has anyone asked me about my grades.

As long as your kids are safe, who cares about the honors?

Worry about whether or not your kid can self-motivate and adjust to adversity, and stop looking to others for validation. Teach them to do the right thing on their own, for their own self-satisfaction.

And remind yourself that no one likes working with a know-it-all, a crusader or someone with a persecution complex. It sure sounds like that’s what you’re projecting to the teachers. No wonder they’re turned off.

Yes, public school that I attended! I'd consider homeschooling but overall she likes her school and enjoys the activities and sports, also band.

I'm afraid I'd be lazy and get her behind!

If I'm projecting a know-it-all attitude it's because for three years I keep finding simple mistakes they've made, including averaging tests and final grades.

I am teaching them to live with integrity and search for self satisfaction.

The one in question definitely self motivates which is why it's so hard on her that this happened.

To bad if the teachers are turned off, they need to do there job despite me if I'm the issue, they're my daughters grades.

Stay out of it. It’s ultimately meaningless. Infuriating, to be sure, but just not that important. I know I got some award at graduation, but, for the life of me, I don’t remember what it was for. Neither will she.
