MILTON WVA---The Centers for Disease Control has released some startling statistics about teen pregnancy in West Virginia.

The number of 15 to 17 year old girls giving birth in the state is up 17 percent.

West Virginia is the only state with that kind of spike.

Teen mother Julie Akers is raising two children. She was a sophomore in high school when she first got pregnant. She says it wasn't easy to grow up fast and she wants other teens to know about the realities of being a young mom.

"It was every day just getting up, making bottles, changing diapers, changing clothes and going to doctors appointments," Akers said.

She adds though that her life is better because her children are in it.

According to the latest state figures Calhoun, Clay, Mingo, McDowell and Tyler counties had the highest rates of teen births in West Virginia.

Ugh! That was absolutely disgusting, but like a car wreck I couldn’t stop looking it.

I didn’t realize that Bill Clinton has been spending time in West Virginia.

Some antibiotics will reduce the efficacy of the pill. I know a couple of women who have become pregnant while taking the pill and on an antibiotic regimen, even though the pill was normally effective. Was there an outbreak of some in-school-transmitted or community acquired disease that required antibiotic treatment that may have led to an uptick in pregnancy?

We do thank God and ask His protection for the Pro-Life community. How our country has degenerated to the point where US Marshalls are used to protect abortionist is beyond me. But not beyond my study of Scripture.

Actually a lot of meds reduce the affects of the pill. I take medication right now that has stickers on that that read “may reduce the affects of the pill”. This is why a woman must tell her doctor every med she is on. Do you think teens do this? NO! Don’t want mommy and daddy to know they are taking the pill. So they get pregnant and wonder why.

I guess the girls have been watching that TV program with the Duggar family in it and the re-runs!

I don't think this is really anything new in West Virginia, when I was a teen in the state back in the 80's there was a running joke that went something like

Q. Why do so many teens get pregnant in West Virginia?

A. What ELSE is there to do on a Friday night?

At least the wording in the story isn’t what they typically use in UK stories about such matters... you know, when they talk about so and so ‘fell pregnant’.....

This reminds me of a totally UN-PC joke (with all apologies to WV Freepers as it’s just a joke).

What’s the most frequently heard phrase coming out of the bedroom window of a mobile home in West Virginia?

“Git off me Daddy! Yer crushin’ my cigarettes!”

In some areas there are real financial incentives for girls to have babies, and the more the better. I know girls who were able to move out of their parents’ modest apartment, get their own more luxurious place in a good school district, and enjoy a life free of the need to work, all because of the generous local/county/state assistance programs for mothers and children. Especially in times of economic hardship when an uneducated girl is not going to be able to find work, this looks like an attractive possibility even with the 2 a.m. feedings.

The answer is found in welfare. WV has been a welfare state since LBJ’s great society experiment. It ain’t working.

You hit it right on ott. In WV, times have always been tough. The people are rugged and clannish. For generations the role of women has been to have babies. Used to be they were expected to also raise a garden, wash and iron clothes and can enough food for the winter. When welfare came along it freed the women from such mundane labor. That only leaves babies. I mean it does get boring if you live in isolated places. As the jokester said, “it’s something to do on Friday night.” A few of the girls are making it out of the welfare trap, but most of them never do.

I saw that show last week. I couldn’t stop laughing. Tears were running down my face! I think the best part of it was when the girl took out the woman to party before she had to go to rehab. It was just crazy!
