A young boy living in Port Said, Egypt, narrowly escapes a bomb blast that destroys the apartment block where he lives. After discovering that both his parents were killed in the explosion, he decides to travel (on foot) to Durban, South Africa, to be with his only living relative, an aunt. During his 4500 mile journey across africa he has many adventures including a first hand experience with the slave trade and living for a time with a band of poachers and criminals. After several months of travel he finally arrives at his destination.
Saw this movie on TV when I was a child and would love to have a copy.

I always check Ebay and found a site www.santaflix.com that carries a new DVD (with Edward G. Robinson)... if that is the one. Hope this helps you, Dallas59!! The site said it was 27 dollars and can be shipped within 3 days.

I remember it too, saw it one time in a theater as a child. My memory was that it was brilliant.

Thanks. I read that it was offered in PAL format, but I believe you can switch your DVD player to NTSC

I’ve never heard of this, but now I have to see it. I really like Eddie Robinson.
His dying scene in Soylent Green gets me every time.

You’ll enjoy it! Simple adventure....but not a kiddy movie.

Thanks! I love these little “unknown” gems. Another favorite is “Goodbye My Lady” about a boy (Brandon DeWilde from “Shane” who lives with his uncle Walter Brennan, and finds a lost basenji dog in the swamps.

How ironic. I...almost out of the blue Google searched this movie about two weeks ago. I must have been watching something that reminded me of that story. I remember watching this movie on TV years ago, and absolutely loved it! I was fascinated with this young boys journey through Africa, but don’t remember the details of the story very well.
I may have to order a copy for my kids too. Thanks for bringing it up.

Boy! have not heard of this for years

It's a classic “coming of age” movie where a boy is suddenly and confusingly orphaned in an air raid during the Suez crisis. He has to E&E overland from Egypt to South Africa, learns to be a man, hangs out with poachers and smugglers and mercenaries as I recall. Great stuff. Terrific movie for young Scouting age boys to see.

I really liked Robinson when he was young, but his Soylent Green character wore a beret for goodness sake!
