(AP) - Protesters sitting on the ground supporting the Occupy Wall Street movement on the campus of the University of California, Davis, on Saturday took a face full of pepper spray at close range from an officer in riot gear in an incident that was captured on cellphone video and spread virally across the internet.
UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi described the video images as "chilling" and said she was forming a task force to investigate even as a faculty group called for her resignation because of the police action Friday.
However, a law enforcement official who watched the clip called the use of force "fairly standard police procedure."
In the video an officer dispassionately pepper-sprays a line of several sitting protesters who flinch and cover their faces but remain passive with their arms interlocked as onlookers shriek and scream out for the officer to stop.
"The use of the pepper spray as shown on the video is chilling to us all and raises many questions about how best to handle situations like this," Chancellor Linda Katehi said in a message posted on the school's website Saturday.

The moral of the story is,when the Police give you a lawful order to move or disperse-just do it.You can always hire a lawyer and take the cops to court if you think your civil rights were somehow violated.
I rather see them taking a boot or two...the bruises will make them remember longer.
Standard procedure. What would they rather have? Some officer slashed with a razor by one of these slobs? Anybody thinking the officers were out of line on this needs to go and visit the family of the last two officers that were slashed by so called “peaceful” protesters.

Chancellor Linda Katehi is a pathetic moron. What is going on in Cairo right now is “chilling”. What happened at the Davis Communist Indoctrination Center was just a bunch of goofy, braindead morons getting sprayed with harmless pepper spray. Lighten up Linda.
This “chilling” event was a step up from doing nothing. I’ve endured worse at the hands of my friends.

The only thing chilling about the video was how the crowd forced the police to make a slow retreat. The crowd started surrounding the police and the police had to slowly back up to make sure no one got separated. Only after the crowd told them they “would not do anything to them” as long as they lowered their weapons and left did the police finally escape.
It was a sad moment that reminded me of how the police abandoned LA during the riots. Too bad there were no Korean shop owners this time.
No, I’m saying that the same people who are appalled and horrified at OWS protestors being pepper sprayed would be delighted if it happened to conservatives blocking an abortion clinic. Suddenly, police force would NOT be an issue.
