ROTTERDAM, Netherlands - Seattle Mariners outfielder Greg Halman has been stabbed to death and his brother has been arrested as a suspect, according to Dutch police.

Rotterdam Police spokeswoman Patricia Wessels says police were called to a home in the Dutch port city early Monday morning and found Halman bleeding from a stab wound.

The officers attempted unsuccessfully to resuscitate the 24-year-old major league baseball player.

Wessels says the officers arrested Halman's 22-year-old brother. She declined to give his name, in line with Dutch privacy rules. Fox News reports that the brother's name is Jason.

Wessels said the brother was being questioned by police.

"Yeah, we arrested his brother who's 22, 6' 1", 195, brn hair, brn eyes with a light complexion and a small tattoo of an anchor on his right arm just above the elbow. Here's his picture. Unfortunately, we can't tell you his name due to privacy rules."

Yeah, like no-one can find out who a famous man’s brother is.

Otherwise - this is horrible! At least that other player from the Nationals got out of his “kidnapping” situation. So much weirdness happening with athletes.

Wilson Ramos. One of the very best young catchers in MLB.

This having happened in the Netherlands makes me wonder if drugs were involved in some way.

I’d guess money.

Which he likely didn’t have a lot of because not even the Mariners are that hard up for a .209 hitter.

I live in Seattle and suffer through being a Mariner's fan. Greg Halman is not an "outfielder with the Mariners". He has come up occasionally from Triple A to play the outfield so that the manager and coaches can see if he is ready for prime time. So far, no. So, he is a professional baseball player who plays in Triple A. He is in the Mariners' organization.

I had a hard time even recognizing his name, but, when they said he was in the Netherlands I remembered that there was one guy who came up, briefly, who had family from the Netherlands.

The ESPN Seattle Mariners roster still lists him—it says he played 35 games in the 2011 season, and 44 in his career, with a batting average this season of .230 and lifetime of .207. He was born August 26, 1987, in Haarlem, the Netherlands.

He was an outfielder for the Mariners then, only in the sense that Terry Francona was a manager for the Red Sox.
