X Box 360 or Sony Playstation?
At home in NC | 11/23/2011 | killermosquito

My son spends more time at his friends than at home because of his love for video gaming. We would like to see more of him and wonder what freepers think. So lets have a Free Republic X Box versus Playstation smackdown. What are you suggestions?

Another option (not sure how feasible, mind you) is to get a Wii instead. It doesn’t have all of the latest and greatest pixel-pushers, but it has some good games for teens, plus a lot of games for the whole family to play together, Netflix streaming, etc.

Barring that, I’d probably go with the Xbox, if only for Kinect — if they’re gonna play video games, make them “active” games (and some chance of a workout for the parents, too!)

With 4 boys (three out of the house) I have used both systems. I have had 2 xbox 360s and both burned out in less than a year. XBOX (microsoft) charges for online play and keeps on charging automatically.

PS3 had the system for two years no problem. No charges for online play, I had no data hacked eitther.

I would go with the PS3

XBox 360 is good for shooter games, and Playstation 3 is good sports games and God Of War 3. The controllers for the Playstation 3, in my experience, aren’t as good as the XBox 360 controller. For the XBox, the games I mostly play are the Call of Duty games. I’m looking to get Battlefield 3 for it as well. True the Playstation network is free, and Xbox Live Gold membership is $60 a year, but sometimes the old saying holds true “You get what you pay for!”.

If XBOX has corrected some of the flaws of its earlier models, then I’d say choose it. My Son has one, and it crapped out with the infamous blinking red light. Just outside of the warranty period, so it would be close to $300 to get it fixed.

Google XBOX and flashing red light for more info. There have been a lot of boxes with this issue.

Which gives the X-Box a very simple but effective means of staving off trolls that frequently ruin online games.

As Doogle pointed out, you should find out what system and games his buddies are using. He'd need to be on a compatible system for online gaming.

With that said, you might see your son more but interaction with him might will be a whole other challenge when he's online.

Having owned and used every major console system since the PS1...

Xbox 360. Better games, better system (with the exception of lacking a blu-ray player), vastly better online system (Xbox Live), and even costs a bit less than a PS3. Throw in Kinect, better controllers, and the fact that PSN has been hacked twice this year alone. No contest.

No, Xbox does NOT require a fee to play. The fee is for Xbox live which is to play online with others, otherwise to play alone or with others at home does not require an extra fee. Sony did have a problem with their accounts getting hacked and play station network was down for a long time as people lost personal info.

The most important thing to do is FIRST look at the available games for each console. Many are the same, but there are notable exceptions. The general rule of thumb is to choose the console whose games best reflect your playing interest. Kinect is considered a joke by serious gamers, but it is well liked by casual gamers. It appealed to the Wii crowd of casual party gamers, but if you play shooters, role playing games, or even sports it is not as efficient as the controller.

The difference in graphics between the two is marginal and not really a factor. I think the Xbox controller feels better in the hand, the ps controller always appeared to be undeveloped from the previous generation. So spend some time just holding the controller.

See what his friends have, and get that one. Thats the main thing really. Its all online and stuff. needs to run the same games.

Get the 360 with the 250g hard drive, I have also the Kinect, its great for those that actually want to get off their butts and move around, if you have any younger children get the Kinectimals, my son who is 17 plays that and loves it but wimps out on the sports games. I like the sports games like boxing and discus and javelin.

But both of us are total Halo gamers, we just finished for about the 50th time the very first Halo:Combat Evolved, they re-released it with upgraded graphic, sounds and more dialogue. Absolutely awesome!

Yes the 360 wireless controllers are great, but they have the best games like Gears of War and all the Halo games.

About the Kinect, its quite groundbreaking and future games like a Star Wars lightsaber duels will be interactive, many say its lightyears better than the Wii. And just buying a console because it has Bluray is moot when you can get a non 3-D version pretty cheap separately.

OK, I recommend XBOX, it's more common and the social network, even though it costs, is highly developed and my son has kept in touch with family and friends all over the USA through it. He chats with his cousins and friends regularly over 1,500 miles away. It's like they're next door.

Also, this weekend they are having killer deals accessible ONLINE, so no going to the store.

I am providing a link to a Black Friday special ad

BIG THING: This special I'm including has a "Buy 2 get 1 FREE" special for used games, regardless of what platform you buy. It is also available online, for your convenience, safety and sanity.

I'll check this thread later, if you are interested, I will give you a list of the best, most popular used games. The new ones are fantastic, but since you are starting, there is a treasure trove of used games for the "buy 2 get 1 free" deal. You could save over $100 per purchase via this route.

Ask your son what he plays at his friends house mostly, that will guide you on what direction to take. If you can deal with "used", the game systems can be bought with an in store replacement policy.

Cheers and all the best, may this be the toughest dilemma you face this year - lol!

I think the PS3 is the superior machine. I prefer the free PS3 online game play. I prefer the the Blu-Ray player in the PS3 over the DVD in the Xbox 360.

However, my boys and their friends disagree, they all use and play Xbox 360 games and that is what we own. It turns out that my opinion is not that important to teens. Go Figure.

I have offered to buy the boys a PS3 the last 2 years and they have told me not to bother.

They don’t make the Gears games or the more current Halo titles for the original XBox. XBox 360 only.

Pinging people to #35 for the "buy 2 get 1 free" promo in post #35.

I'd ping everyone but I keyed on XBox or 360. ANYONE can get something out of the Black Friday deals above and it's online, too.

Cheers!

Also, for the folks saying "Try reality", we do. We've explored more of Arizona in the time we've been here that many people who've lived here 5 times as long. We've made a point to get the kids to fall in love with this state by seeing as many amazing things it has to offer as possible.

We explored ancient Indian ruins, discovered settlements that aren't recorded (finding old Indian morter holes that aren't documented is pretty darn cool, too!) Explored the multiple hot springs pouring into the Colorado river and discovered the source of the springs in the West Fork (Trail 108.) We LOVE this place...it's AMAZING!

But we also like "to game". So we enjoy both worlds together...

The last two generations of Xbox 360 have been pretty reliable.
