'Brinicle' ice finger of death filmed in Antarctic
BBC ^ | 11-23-2011 | Ella Davies

A bizarre underwater "icicle of death" has been filmed by a BBC crew.

With time lapse cameras, specialists recorded salt water being excluded from the sea ice and sinking.

The temperature of this sinking brine, which was well below 0C, caused the water to freeze in an icy sheath around it.

Where the so-called "brinicle" met the sea bed, a web of ice formed that froze everything it touched, including sea urchins and starfish....

Wow. Interesting. The commentator sounds like that British commentator who did the nature series on PBS years ago. Don’t remember his name or the name of the series.

Sometimes you get the bear, and sometimes the bear encases you in a deadly tomb of hypercooled sea water.

Is that complete clip recorded under the ice? Some of it looks like CGI to me, especially where all the starfish are running around.

“Don’t remember his name or the name of the series.”

David Attenborough (sp?) The series was called ‘Nature’, IIRC

Its a time lapse film about 5-6 hours compressed into that video, so maybe that’s why it seems strange to you?

It’s time lapse; 5 hours sped up into a couple of minutes.

Perhaps.

Whenever I have seen starfish, they are moving so slowly that they appear immobile. Yet there they are in that film, running around so fast that they need numbers painted on their backs.

"...ice finger of death..."

I saw the headline and it brought back cheek-clenching nightmares of my first Army physical.
