Florida runners donate medals, trophy to disqualified foes

In one of the more generous incidents in recent prep sports memory, a Florida girls cross country team voluntarily gave up their runners-up medals and trophy to a school which they felt deserved them more, and they did so entirely of their own volition, without any influence of a coach or other adult.

"...because of a bizarre mix up with the timing chips on the shoes of two team members. Those mismatched timing chips -- which are used to ensure that a runner follows the correct course and crosses the finish line and all check points..."

Apparently the chips don't ensure that a runner follows the correct course, check points, etc. If they "ensured" it, there would not have been a screw-up. Anyways, it's good to know that cross country races are now technologically enhanced to the point where the fastest runners are declared the losers because of who wore what chip. Maybe they can just implant the chips so this never happens again...< /sarc>

Another well-constructed post. It still makes me feel as good as dogs, cats and horses do.

I recall a highschool basketball game where they let the autistic ball boy don a jersey and get in the game...the opponents gave him room...and he started draining three pointers!

Bizarre my butt my daughter is running now - one of the rainiest seasons on record caused all kinda issues with these stupid chips. I don’t see why they need them in the first place...

In a year, a guy wouldn’t be able to find a medal. In three years, he couldn’t care less about it.

LOL...What sport requires fewer rules than running?

1. Start.

2. Finish.

3. Don't leave the course.

4. No punching.

Apparently, it is beyond the capability of school athletic officials to enforce these simple rules, so they have to make new rules incorporating the technology. I suspect that in our overly-litigious society, even our purest athletics have been suffused with burdensome, arcane, confusing, complicated rules in the name of "fairness." I'd also venture a guess that the chip maker, marketer, wholesaler or retailer probably has a sister-in-law, cousin, fraternity brother, etc. working for the state's school athletics governing body...
