DENVER — Heavyweight contender Ron Lyle, who fought Muhammad Ali for the title in 1975 and later battled George Foreman, has died in Denver at age 70.

I remember the tv did an intro on him prior to fighting Ali. Lyle said he ‘died’ from something (I cant remember) and the doctors brought him back. He wasnt scared of fighting Ali because of this. He seemed a sincere man.

IIRC, Lyle was the one who learned boxing while in a Colorado prison. He was that perpetual underdog you tended to root for. He lived longer than Joe Frazier.

Foreman-Lyle was a match for the ages. Each had the other beat in damn near every other round...even in the same round. Absolute war thru the end.

Lyle said in prison when he had nothing to do he would do push ups. He got to where he did 1000 in an hour.

He was a much more likeable personality than the Louisville Lip. The ref stopped his match against Clay whith Lyle on his feet and not in such serious trouble compared to what he triumphed over in other fights.
