(VANITY) Need advice on the perfect Scotch to buy for my male friend for Christmas

I need some advice.

I have a very special friend who loves good Scotch. He has everything else, so I thought I might wrap up a good Scotch for Christmas.

I know he'll use this, unlike some worthless gift he won't want (I actually got him a massage for his birthday last sumer and he wouldn't go -- it's a macho thing).

Okay I know this thread is going to raise some silly answers, but I am a beer drinker, and don't know a thing about the "refined" spirits.

Id appreciate any serious answers to my question.

Depends on how much you want to spend and what his preferences are. The blends (Dewar's, Cutty Sark, others) cannot compare to the single malts (Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, MacCallan, and others are lighter than the peaty ones like Oban). If you have the money, MaCallan 18 will bring a broad smile to any Scotch drinker's face. Cheers!

Since you don't mind spending a few dollars, McCallan 25 year old. Okay, maybe a little younger.

It depends on his tastes. Smokey, fruity, oaky, etc.

Good luck with the gift.

BTW, if its whiskey, go Jameson!

It really depends on what your friend likes as well as your budget.

For the sake of discussion, let’s say this friend is worth a little expense. If the budget isn’t an issue, I would suggest a 25 year Scapa (~$350) or really go nuts and get him the Lalique 50 year old Macallan (~$6,000).

More reasonable but something you won’t find on every liquor store shelf would be an 18 year old Auchentoshan (~$80) or Compass Box Oak Cross blended (~$40)

good post and very true. A friend of mine was a bartender and a scotch drinker. He had the opportunity to try most of them and he definitely picked dewars. But yes it is a personal thing and whatever brand the person tends to prefer is the choice.

If you want one with a really peaty taste, try Laphroaig 10 Year Old Islay Single Malt.

Depends on how much you want to spend. There are some single malts that taste like the bottom of an ashtray...yuck. Then there are some awesome ones too. There are so many different ones. My favorite is Oban, smooth but pricey.

..also, this may be sacrilegious around here, but one of the best 'Scotch' whiskey's I've had lately is a Japanese one, the Yamazaki Single Malt. It would definitely be different.

***One interesting note about Night Train is that it specifically states on the bottle to Serve very cold *****

Men I served with in the military had a preference for THUNDERBIRD.
