A fashion and beauty maven says women should look to the first lady for inspiration on how to stock their own closets with style.
Mikki Taylor, the editor at large for Essence magazine, even bestows a new title on Michelle Obama in her new book, Commander in Chic: Every Womans Guide to Managing her Style Like a First Lady.
Taylor, who first became attracted to Obamas fashion sense while working with her on a 2006 magazine story, says that unlike other presidents wives, Michelle Obama effectively dresses for Michelle Obama. She dresses to delight herself. Shes not so influenced by the trends.
Even when that means rebelling against one of the most blatant fashion faux pas around: wearing the same outfit again and again. Obama, 47, has been known to rock the same frock twice (or sometimes three times). She donned the same Thakoon floral dress at an October event that she had worn two times before in 2009.
But Taylor calls it making a repeat performance, and says, Youve never seen that before, and you really dont see it from women in the public eye. A great dress is a great dress. A great look is a great look. Why not wear it again?
And the author, who has worked with countless models and celebs, has some tricks of the trade that shes picked up from studying the first ladys style to help Washington women become their own Capitol Hill fashionistas.

barf, upchuck, regurgitate, blow my cookies, hurl, throw-up... I cannot come up with anymore right now...
Mikki sounds like she might be from the Planet Wookie.
Look Mikki, here is the deal. You are freaking delusional. The biotch looks like Patrick Ewing in a dress!
Good lord. I have no fashion sense and I can see that is just wrong!
Did Alton Brown ever look better?
Pander pander pander
Racial pandering is the only way the Obamas get ‘compliments’
I'm sure that is the opinion of a select few because the common man is laughing at the fashion world's Expert.
“Look Mikki, here is the deal. You are freaking delusional. The biotch looks like Patrick Ewing in a dress!”
Spew alert next time please.
You know what they say about great comedy...it contains nuggets of truth. :-D
"Hey! She's ugly!"
"And he's stupid!"
What’s with those darn belts?
My mother (who truly was a beautiful woman, she looked like a movie star and I am not kidding) was wild for those awful belts too.
Ok, I hate belts, they looked merely OK on my beautiferous mom, on Michelle they are just to die FROM.
In the future can we get some American man to marry Pippa Middleton and SHE can be our first lady?
I mean, how cool would that be?
“She dresses to delight herself. Shes not so influenced by the trends”
Buy “trends” I assume we’re talking “common sense and a subtle understanding of grace and tact”?
She’s the only person who can make Mario Batali look skinny.
The biotch looks like Patrick Ewing in a dress!
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Uh, I would think YOU are somewhat lucky that Patrick will probably never see this comment.
I mean, what do you have against Ewing?
My son just took a look at Michelle and said “I didn’t realize that Michelle was a Dolphin’s fan.” LOL!!
I know it’s photo-shopped, but that picture just never gets old! Two backsides with a PhD and one with a sixth grade education!
commander in chic?....WTF?
is this woman blind?
I guess big arses, no style, classless, can’t sit down with her legs closed, showing her ;panty lines always looking angry and eating fry ups is chic to her then
I remember the same things being said about Hillary Clinton 20 years ago.
Yet, Laura Bush was “frumpy.’
the wife of the socialist commander is more like it...
LOL Yeah, we can tell she dresses to delight herself.
She’s taller than two men, and uglier than fifty. Really, truly without grace. Very sad.
It’s all politics.
These are the same people who say Sarah Jessica Parker is a looker and that Madonna is cultured
She dresses to delight herself. Shes not so influenced by the trends
No, honey, she’s not so influenced by TASTE and CLASS! As my mother has ALWAYS taught me......”_____________ , dear, one cannot BUY good taste and class. It’s TAUGHT.”
Didn’t somebody get thrown out of school for saying that?
I am not kidding, that person (and I use that term loosely) on the left looks a lot like the NJ Nets coach Avery Johnson! No offense to Mr. Johnson intended. If one of you photo shop genius’ could put their pictures side by side you would see.
And why should we care what his “man” thinks?
You know what I find to be the most attractive part of Michelle?
Her shin nodules!
MMMM MMMM MMMM!
LOL...when Mario Batali looks better, with his orange chef’s clogs on, you know you are at the bottom of the fashion ladder.
I have to say that I like this outfit, BUT.................it is appropriate for a young girl, teens or early twenties. It is not appropriate for a middle aged woman.
I am now middle aged and yes, sadly, there are definitely things we can no longer wear. We live in a college town & on football weekends the amount of women trying to dress like their daughters is really out of control.
And if you are the first lady you DO owe it to your country to dress in a ladylike manner. It’s part of the job. That’s part of the charm of getting older; you can be elegant. Trendiness is for the young, NOT for older women.
...or good taste, or common sense, or mirrors, or...
You forgot “BARF ALERT”.
WOOF! Ugly! NASTY!
