Good morning gardeners. As many of you may know, my wife is a manager at a Wal-Mart Superstore. About a month or so ago she was approached, via email, by Wal-Mart, informing her that there was a position opening up in one of their stores in Shreveport, La. and they wanted to do a phone interview with her if she was interested. She agreed and did the interview. Well last week they called her back and told her the position was hers if she wanted it. We were given an hour to make the decision. Job wise this is a good move for her and Shreveport is her hometown and a few of her family still live there or near there. She has 4 brothers and 4 sisters. The decision for her was easy but for me it was very hard to agree to the move. We own the property and the small house here in Meridian. This house and property will be very hard to sell. We will have to find a rental house that has a fenced in yard and that will accept our two dogs.
The reason for me sharing this information with all of you is, I may not be able to keep posting the Weekly Gardening Thread and I dont know if I will even be able to have a garden next year. So I am hoping someone in the gardening community will be willing to continue the thread on a reliable and weekly basis. Currently there are 490 Freepers on the ping list and quite a few look forward to the thread every week. I am hoping at least one or even more of you would like to do the posting or even share the responsibility in posting the thread and keep it going.
They said that they want her in Shreveport sometime after Christmas but have not given a specific date yet. I will be staying here and keep posting and she will be staying with one of her sisters until she can find a suitable house.
The store she is being transferred to is on the extreme west side of Shreveport and she is looking in the Marshall, Tx area for housing. So if any of you know anything about the area please let me know.
I've got a short stack of catalogs already, and have to take breaks from browsing them because I want to plant everything that sounds/looks good. LOL! Like a kid in the candy store!
Got 2 garden chores yet to do ... relocate the compost pen and clean the dead tomato and pepper plants out of the garden and into the compost pen. Well, I need to bushhog the speckled butter beans too, but I could classify that as a yard chore, I guess.
After rain delays, they started bringing in the material to construct the solar system this morning. Lots of angle iron and aluminum bars to build the standoffs on the roof of the equipment shed. The shed is white, and I was impressed that they had painted all of the metalwork white so that it doesn't show on the shed. Of course, the solar panels themselves will stand out like a sore thumb, but at least what is holding them in place will look like it belongs there.
Be cautious of putting the tomato plants in the compost pile incase they harbor diseases that can be carried over. Check with your Ag agent...
LIME! I use a lot of if to keep the blossom end rot away, Also the rabbits don’t like the taste.. The plants don’t seem to mind it all. I have managed to get the PH to a 7.0.. WOOO HOOOO!
Thanks!
Thanks for the warning ... I’ll put them in the burn pile instead, just to be sure. Really am not in need of any additional material for the compost heap anyway. We’ve got a semi-truck sized load of oak leaves that need to go somewhere :) I’m going to layer the leaves with litter from the donkey barn (have no shortage of that either).
Wood ash from the fireplace as an additional layer in the compost pen. I’m about ready to add a couple of side ‘compartments’ to the main pile, in order to store ash and donkey poo.
Thanks to all of you on your best wishes for our move.
JADB, I agree with all who have agreed that you would be a super choice as Keeper Of The Ping List - thank you for Standing up for the cause. I keep two separate ping lists the one I ping the FReepers with, it is in the order in which each FReeper joined the thread and the other is an Excel spread sheet that is sorted alphabetically. I will FReepMail the list to you.
It is satisfying to know the thread will be in good hands.
We have already started packing - Jeez so much stuff! Boxes everywhere. I think my wife has laid claim to every box that her Wal-Mart gets in.
I can’t believe we are moving again.
At my wife’s level of management All Wal-mart will do is pay for all of our moving expenses. And that is about all. It might be different at the higher up levels. I don’t know.
You may end up loving it.
Transitions and moving are the pits though.
I know I will never like leasing or renting a home. We probably will just keep this house and check on it every month or so. A fall back position of sorts in case TSHTF.
Thank you and Best wishes to you and your family.
I don’t much like cold weather, but after being cooped up in a stuffy office all week long I try to spend as much time as possible outdoors on the weekend.
I’d love to build a heated greenhouse but Mrs. Augie still hasn’t bought a good lottery ticket. ;-)
I don’t know about the rain fall in that area that is one reason why I asked for advice about that area.
I hear ya on that lottery ticket!
SOUTH FL GARDEN PIC, 2nd UPDATE!
We dump our extra veggies at our church by a large oak tree. These are the eggplants I added this morning from the garden. Hard to get rid of all this stuff when it comes in all at one time. The Rednecks out here share a lot of great stuff they grow. One day I drove by the church and there were 50 watermellon dumped out there, Wow were they sweet!

Have you ever tried winter squash or watermellon on a compost pile? My sister has horses so she has a lot of “COMPOST”,, Wondering if it’s just to warm to plant some winter crops ontop of a compost pile..
Oh wow. Me too. Once those catalogs get here, I want it all.LOL.
Oh jeez. Me too. I would love to have a green house, but no money to do it either, unless something changes.LOL.
I agree with tubebender. Highlight of my week.
