OAKLEY, Utah -- When the Tiede family headed off to spend a snowy Christmas at their remote family cabin, they had no idea what the trip would bring. Two sisters who survive a harrowing home invasion share the terrifying story in their first extended television interview.

Linae Tiede: My family owns a beautiful cabin in Oakley, Utah. The sound of the river, the horses that are down in the pasture, the birds -- it's absolutely heaven on earth to me.

My mom had given it a name: "Tiede's Tranquility," because of the serenity and peace.

Trish Tiede: The cabin was an awesome place to go to.

As a young child, I loved going up there, bringing aunts and uncles, and cousins.

The cabin was about 2-and-a-half miles off the road....And you have to snowmobile in during the wintertime. It was an escape from the world for our family.

Trish Tiede: It was the winter of 1990.

Linae Tiede: I was 20 years old. And my little sister was 16.

Trish Tiede: It was Christmastime. We're off for the holidays.

Trish Tiede: There's a large Christmas tree with lots of gifts around it.

Linae Tiede: My mom even had our Christmas stockings hung under the fireplace mantel, ready for Santa to come (smiles at the memory).

Three days before Christmas, our family had to finish up our Christmas shopping and head back up to the family cabin.

My mom and grams and I arrived at the cabin...first.

And my hands were freezing. ...it was a bitter cold winter that year. I asked my mom to hurry...and unlock the door. I needed to run in and run my hands under some water and I would be right back down to help her.

I got to the top of the stair...and I saw...

I can't imagine being out in middle of nowhere and not being armed.

This is why God invented hanging trees.

I have a son who lives in Oakley with his wife and two kids. I also have a daughter and her family in Park City, twenty minutes away.

Both of them are armed and dangerous!

I can’t imagine being here in Tallahassee unarmed(8th most dangerous city in the country). But I get your point. Defenseless is horrifying..

“I can't imagine being out in middle of nowhere and not being armed.”

When I head out into our sprawling 46 acre spread - I'm armed.

There is a name for people that go into any type of undeveloped area unarmed - prey.

This was featured last week on 48hrs mystery or similar show. Amazing story of the father, overcoming injuries to ride down the the mountain in the freezing temps on a snow mobile. If he hadn’t done that, those girls might never have survived.

The perps, even took video of themselves opening the family’s presents, leaving the tape in the recorder for investigators to find.

I saw it, it was excellent. That father surely went above and beyond. Brave family all around.

Have a friend with a 2000+ acre farm that is remote. She and her husband are always armed. Too many "hoodies" have started cruising remote areas looking for secluded houses to break into. Her stories are the stuff of made-for-TV movies...

I am a bit more urban, but am usually armed. I encourage my grown children to do likewise...

A couple of weeks ago there was a story about a woman at home with her 16 year old daughter. Her told her two men are in the back yard and one has a gun. The woman called her husband, he told her to get her own gun.

The men weren’t there when she went back outside. But three hours later the men returned, one pointed a gun at her and she fired and hit him, the other fled. I love good endings.

How does some POS like this get the death penalty, yet is still breathing 21 years later?

My parents live in a very remote area in a cabin like home on a 100 acre plus land. They are loaded with guns and ammunition. They don’t go to the door without a rifle in their hands if they don’t recognize whos there. People need to stop fearing guns and stock up on them!! My 13 year old just got his first small rifle on his birthday!

That is a hard story to read. We don’t leave our house unarmed. Not even to walk the dogs down the street. Its just not worth taking the chance.

That article starts out talking about "assault rifles" in the Christmas stockings....right under a picture of little .22 Crickets, including a pink one.

LOL!

One of these days I'm going to get me one of those little pink ones just because they're so cute.

I am in the same position as your folks, I live up in the mountains year round and it is remote also. Same ideas on self defense. I don’t even enter my place, after being out, unarmed. I don’t expect, but anticipate a possible home invader still being inside. (Not paranoid but prepared). Just a disadvantage of living up/out in the boonies but I wouldn’t trade it for anything!

Our liberal big government has been paying for these animals’ room and board with our tax money and doing this for 11 years. That's justice?

They should torture and kill them slowly over days: Maybe that would deter these POS? At least that's justice.

But our liberal big government is going in the opposite direction giving these criminals everything.
