How vulgar! 1 million 24-carat gold Rolls-Royce is unveiled
Mail on Line ^ | 17 Dec 2011 | Craig Mackenzie

Posted on 12/17/2011 5:28:05 PM PST by mandaladon

The Rolls-Royce has always had a history of elegance and class - until now.

That prestigious reputation has been smashed by the world's most vulgar makeover of the company's iconic Ghost model.

An Italian fashion design house has created a gold-covered monstrosity costing more than £1 million

The Fenice Milano 'Diva' has been spray painted in 24-carat gold and the company is so proud of it they have described the model as a 'true.masterpiece.'

It is fitted with the same 6-litre twin-turbocharged engine of the Ghost, giving the saloon more than 560bhp and a top speed of 155mph.

Fenice Milano believes their Rolls-Royce is a 'synonym for class, elegance and style'. many would disagree.

The interior has biscuit leather and 24-carat gold throughout. The standard Ghost costs £220,000 but the Diva is now for sale at £1.05million. Phillip Brooks, a Rolls-Royce historian, described the car as 'bizarre' but also 'spectacular'.

He said: "I think what Fenice is doing with the Ghost is quite interesting. It's certainly a case of gilding the lily, but the gilding job looks pretty good.

'My personal taste doesn't run to something like a Diva, but I think it would be great fun to show up in one. All in all, perhaps a slightly bizarre car, but a very neat one.'

“Painted” or plated? Either way, it probably wasn’t a hugely expensive piece of the decor. Not much gold is needed for either approach.

I’d be a bit miffed, if after traveling down some country road to my estate, that the gold paint chipped off.

I could give a crap less about these dumbass millionaires doing something like that. More power to them...if I get in the position they are in I may do something just as extravagant; however I do care about getting my nose rubbed in it.

Why do some of those of us who have made it big want to brag about it? It's a disgusting trait.

Hate braggarts

I was in NYC for a meeting and the guy I was with drove a $92K Porsche. He loved getting in and out of that car, especially next to a $40-50K Lexus or BMW.

At the end of the day we went to a mid-town steakhouse. He pulled up, got out and gloated...until a $350k Bentley coupe pulled up behind him...one of the guys with us told him..."Brother, you might as well be driving a Toyota."

I don't care how much gold it has and don't care whether or not it's vulgar. Aside from those considerations, it goes beyond the realm of ugliness into that of sheer hideosity.

There's a reason ill-gotten gains are so shortlived, and the simpletons who drop a million for this gaudy bauble will be exhibit A. Mideast and African potentates, rappers and pro sports figures. Nobody else would be caught dead in it.

I never realized how much the current Rolls sedan resembles a Toyota Camry in front 3/4 view, either. They just don't have the panache that older Rolls sedans had. Plop a goldtone Superfly grille on a Camry SE with similar twenty inch rims and two tone paint ... voila, a knockoff "Diva" for 1/20 the price.

Not in any worse taste, either, for that matter.

The only thing I would want, if I did ever make enough money to be classified as rich, is a three bedroom condominium downtown in my city.

I’d be more than happy to live a reasonably frugal and simple life otherwise.

For a fraction of that price I’d rather have a Jaguar E-type S2, with every possible system upgrade.
Imagine if Max Factor had worked as Helen Thomas’s personal stylist. At the end of the day she’d still be the ugliest woman ever. And a bit of gold won’t make the Ghost anything more or less than what it is—a really unattractive car.

There was a special on TV several weeks ago.
It was a tour of the Rolls factory as they are being built.
The detail in building one is quite remarkable.
I am amazed that all of them are not close to one mill.

For example, the wood trim has to be all from the same tree
to have a matching pattern.

Yeah, the lifestyle I want to live doesn’t need gold faucets or anything.

Even the reason why I want a three bedroom condo is so thay I can have one of the bedrooms as a home office and the other bedroom so I can have a real exercise room/hobby room.

My time is important to me and being able to use my time for things I want to do, as opposed to what I have to do, is my personal priority.

I’ve thought about, if I had the money, to buy an acreage or something. Get away from people. :)

But I’ve thought about it and mowing all summer long or shovelling mile-long driveways in the winter really don’t appeal to me, though I’d love to garden.

For me, the comromise is that my patio would be quite the botanical garden, while I live in my condo would allow me to do my thing.

Modern imitation gold plate looks very close to the real McCoy and is more wearproof, and “brass” faucets are often done that way. You can even get them at Lowe’s. Ladies often appreciate the luxury touch even if the guys couldn’t care. It’s something about le difference that only God can understand. Maybe the serpent did it to the apple to get Eve interested, whereas Adam could care less until the serpent made it look more like a genuine NFL football.

Hardly the first Rolls Royce with gold plating. Some have taken it farther using solid gold pieces.

http://autos.yahoo.com/news/-8-1-million-gold-plated-rolls-royce-redefines-excess.html

The plebeian chrome-plated door handles, trunk-lid trim, hinges and hardware on the rear picnic tables were replaced with 265 pounds of solid 18K gold

Typical incompetent reporting. The ignorant reporters are big on hyperbole and short on real knowlege. Paint, plating, what's the difference? At most there is probably a few thousand dollars of gold invoved.

24 Carat gold Rolls? Hardly.
