A Vandalized Valley (VDH nails it)
National Review ^ | 12/21/2012 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 12/21/2011 5:47:29 AM PST by GlockThe Vote

While the elites make excuses, citizens cope with theft and destruction.

I am starting to feel as if I am living in a Vandal state, perhaps on the frontier near Carthage around a.d. 530, or in a beleaguered Rome in 455. Here are some updates from the rural area surrounding my farm, taken from about a 30-mile radius. In this take, I am not so much interested in chronicling the flotsam and jetsam as in fathoming whether there is some ideology that drives it.

Last week an ancestral rural school near the Kings River had its large bronze bell stolen. I think it dated from 1911. I have driven by it about 100 times in the 42 years since I got my first license. The bell had endured all those years. Where it is now I don’t know. Does someone just cut up a beautifully crafted bell in some chop yard in rural Fresno County, without a worry about who forged it or why — or why others for a century until now enjoyed its presence?

This civilizational collapse is happening in slow-motion everywhere...different locations produce different circumstances.

Around here, we've even had instances of farm crops being stolen out of the fields. One of my neighbors had all the persimmons stolen off his tree in his yard.

Typical Liberal mindset (nail on the head sentence):
We
[California enforcement] need middle-class misdemeanors to pay for the felonies of the underclass.

Something to keep in mind when TSHTF - why you and your neighbors should be armed to the teeth:
. . . our rural homes are like stray sheep outside the herd, without whatever protection is offered by the density of a town.
Unfortunately, depending on the density, the "density of the town" could be a minus.

Small, light, high speed calibers are good for varmints. Something like a .220 Swift or 22-250, in a hollow point at the light and fast end. Nothing left but little lead and copper splinters.

Sitting here waiting for all the FReepers to start piling on poor, lost California, the state you all agreed to give up without even a shot being fired...

“You brought it on yourselves! You deserve it, fruits and nuts! Why don’t you do something about it?!? We should wall off California from the rest of the country! We should give it back to Mexico! The people of California are utterly contemptible! This could NEVER happen here in _________, because we’re made of better stuff than you losers in California!”

There is nothing braver than an American taking on the enemy abroad, and nothing more cowardly than an American averting his gaze from the enemy in his own backyard.

No need. You've done an excellent job all by yourself.

Central California, the nation’s breadbasket, has become a dump for a nation now overrun with human garbage.

We already have a road-map for where this is going.

Its called ARGENTINA. study their society, their economy, their public safety to learn about your future.

I’m not such an alarmist as to say society will collapse, but it will get uglier, and it will bounce along the bottom for a long time.

Brutal description - but very true.

There is a simple, but not PC answer: the 3S System of deterrence (Shoot, Shovel, Shut-up).

If the dumb thugs start disappearing, the stealing will drop, and the politicians will congratulate themselves how “brilliant” their policies are.

It is time to start lopping off digits. 1st offense, lop off weak hand pinkie finger. 2nd, strong hand pinkie finger. Keep going alternating hands until you get to the thumbs. When criminals no longer have opposable thumbs, I predict a dramatic decrease in the crime rate. No criminal should have 24 convictions like that.

This is also why I have always been a proponent of long prision sentences. Like he said, a $200 haul might cost $1,500 to repair. Petty criminals rack up huge costs in damage. Much better to pay the $25,000/year to warehouse them in captivity. Much better. It is a lot of money, but these jackasses rack up much much higher costs with hospital care being the highest cost, when they get shot or harmed in the commission of their crimes.

We need to start cutting off digits, but absent that, we should just send our criminals to 3rd world prisons on the cheap. China would be great place to warehouse all of our prisoners. They could build a few dozen prisons in no time, and use unemployed rural folk for guards, all cheap.

I knew this already because I pull dogs and occasionally cats and kittens north from the central valley animal shelters. They are being dumped at record rates and none are being adopted. They roam the streets and starve.

The valley has lost most civilization as the rest of us know it.
