Good to see that they didn’t elect to give them a firearm to see what would happen.

Possibly. At the very least, looking at the leader would have been interpreted as a challenge, which is one of those things one ought not to do assuming one wants to live a long, pain-free life.

How big did you think they were? Also, for their size, they are incredibly solid. That big male may not be much larger than a big human, but he weighs easily three times as much.

I have a book by Belle Benchley who was one of the first zoo keepers to try to make the captive environment of the zoo comfortable with the animals and to develop a relationship with them. One of her challenges was a huge gorilla that she had personally seen throw a 400lb log around its cage like it was nothing. She eventually befriend him and would bring him grapes. He loved them, but did not like the peals. She was awed by the fact that this massive animal could peal grapes better than she could.

They are also several times stronger per weight. If you could teach one to do it they could bench press nearly 2 tons.

An amazing video. The silverback could easily pull the guys arms off. They have incredible strength.

The guy did the smart thing, staying still and not making eye contact. The silverback could easily see that he was no threat. They are amazing animals.

I just did some reading and the Silverbacks have the strength of at least 10 of the biggest football players. Another site said they have been known to bend 2" thick steel bars.

Those little ones are just so darn cute. You just want to grab one and give it a big hug... for about the one second you could before big daddy rips your arms off.

I missed that but I can't blame him. Loved the way the silverback pulls the baby back away from the guy. Taking responsibility for his charges not letting them be too rough with the fragile human.

Chimps are very different from gorillas. Much more dangerous. They have too much in common with us. I’ll never forget the October ‘78 NatGeo issue with the article that had Jane Goodall’s revelations of war, serial killing and cannibalism.

The swashbuckling Arthur Jones, inventor of the Nautilus exercise machines, actually HAD a pet lowland gorilla, name of Mickey, whom he taught how to work the equipment. It was unbelievable how much weight the critter could move.

Gorillas, on the whole, are much larger than chimps but are much less aggressive than chimps. Male chimps will attack male humans with very little, or no, provocation. Gorillas need a reason. Still the guy was correct in averting his eyes from the Silver Back, who looked to me to weight about 600 lbs.
