Massive 1,100+ year old Maya site discovered in Georgia's mountains

Archaeological zone 9UN367 at Track Rock Gap, near Georgia’s highest mountain, Brasstown Bald, is a half mile (800 m) square and rises 700 feet (213 m) in elevation up a steep mountainside.

Visible are at least 154 stone masonry walls for agricultural terraces, plus evidence of a sophisticated irrigation system and ruins of several other stone structures. Much more may be hidden underground.

It is possibly the site of the fabled city of Yupaha, which Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto failed to find in 1540, and certainly one of the most important archaeological discoveries in recent times.

Likely. You should take a look at the pictures of stone and clay tobacco pipes found buried in Mounds throughout the Ohio Valley.

Although they could have been obtained through round about trade with other tribes, and moved hand to hand over thousands of miles, they could also have been made easily by Maya then invading the South Central states.

BTW, that's a KNOWN FACT. Culturally Mayan people were present in North America, and certainly South Florida and Caribbean islands.

We’ll never be able to shut those La Raza lowlifes up now. Guess we all better get ready to be shipped back to Europe.

I don't know. This might be something to shut them up. The Anglo settler's descendents should now only deal with those tribes we know have been in the US area for many centuries and not a bunch of recent illegal arrivals in the Southwest and West.

Deal with the Cherokee and Creek and the tribes known to have lived in what is now the US when the settlers began arriving.

“Guess we all better get ready to be shipped back to Europe.”

I just found out tonight that my maternal great grandparents were full Dutch. So now my heritage is Scotch-Irish/Swedish/Dutch.

I’m Eurotrash!

Keeping track with such things, this area is pret' near due South of the Great Serpent Mound at Peebles Ohio.

The "dates" are a tad different, but we can't rule out EARLIER Mayan forays into this area.

It's due East of Arrow Rock Missouri, and West of Arcola WV and Arcola VA.

Not that any of that means anything, but if this place has 1/2 square mile of designated space, that's about 500 arpents.

It could very well have a mix of Mayan AND Spanish settlement patterns, and "artifacts".

Don't believe DeSoto's journal when he said they didn't find gold ~ there's ALWAYS gold associated with Iron Pyrite. That's invariably an iron/nickel meteorite site ~ I'll do some detailed checking tomorrow to see if there's an outline of any early settlement that follows the design required in The Law Of The Indies.

Very true. I have a pile of 10,000 year old points found in the field just below my folks house here in the mountains of NC.

Yeah, they had one heck of a travel agent who didn't rely on Greyhound Bus Lines at all.

In genetics, they call it “hybrid vigor.” Stronger and better than purebred, and certainly less boring.

Why would they pick a mountain to terrace and irrigate when there is plenty of valley land with good soil and water?

... One of the favorite stories about Track Rock Gap was recorded by ethnographer James Mooney who gathered Cherokee stories. The Cherokee called this site Datsu'nalasgun'ylu (where there are tracks) and Degayelun'ha (the printed or branded place). Cherokee stories include an explanation that hunters paused in the gap and amused themselves by carving the glyphs: the marks were made in a great hunt when the animals were driven through the gap, and that the tracks were made when the animals were leaving the great canoe after a flood almost destroyed the world and while the earth and rocks were soft. In 1867, conservationist John Muir traveled nearby and met a mountaineer who said, "It is called Track Gap ... from the great number of tracks in the rocks — bird tracks, bar tracks, hoss tracks, men tracks, all in the solid rock as if it had been mud. "
