I need a little advice and would appreciate any input. My laptop recently died and I'm in the market for a replacement. My problem is that I can't decide if I want a tablet or another laptop. Tablets appeal to me because of their size and weight and great portability but I'm concerned about what the limitations might be versus a laptop.

Specifically, can I browse the internet easily with a tablet? Will I be able to view movies and video? What about using office apps like excel or power point. I probably wouldn't be using a Tablet to create documnets but I would definately use it to view them. I also need to be able to access my company network via Citrix.

If you think a tablet would do the trick any thoughts about Apple vs a Galaxy?

Any thoughts? Again...your input and advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think you meant this for pgkdan. I have two pretty new laptops. Don’t need another...

With tablets, the major distinction will be going either Android or Apple. Apple is good if you like simplicity, however, it has a major drawback when it comes to the ability to view Flash content. (movies, animations, some websites, using some forms, etc). Apple right now has more apps but frankly, I don’t think you’ll have any problem finding a specific type of app either way you go.

Androids are more complicated, allow for more custom configurations, and will allow you to view more content types on the net, such as Flash content.

If you have a large iTunes music or movie library, it is easier to manage with an iPad. It isn’t impossible to convert them over to an Android tab though.

I’ve chosen a Droid tab (Xoom) myself and my wife has an iPad. I am about to get a Droid Xyboard for work.

>>>Excel and Power Point are Microsoft products. You need the right OS to run them.

iPad versions said to be coming soon.

...oh, and FReeping is easy on either. This is probably the best site for any type of mobile device. A lot of other forums are a headache on tablets or smartphones.

Get a Mac, they just work!!

I'll second that.!!

Just spent 2 evenings trying to get past the BSoD on my daughter's PC. Finally gave up and got her a new (used) box.

...and office apps are easy on both (the apps just have different names). However, to make it easier, if you are just doing basic stuff, you may want to look at something like Google Docs.

Good for people who need it but creating a spreadsheet with an iPad can't be fun.

HTML 5 is still a few years out from being widely accepted and there are very few development programs available right now. Adobe is working on a major update for Flash’s backbone, AS4 which will make it more friendly to mobile devices. I wouldn’t count Flash out. Adobe is too engrained to be left by the wayside. It is also going to take many years for Flash to be replaced, if it is, which means if you buy a tablet tomorrow, are you really wanting to wait three or more years to view and work with some sites?

Love my Xoom. 10.1 screen is plenty big. I do use my laptop at home for the most part, but anywhere else, my Xoom goes with me. I watch videos etc. Haven’t used any wp or other office apps. Maybe I will go load one now!
Apple folks will swear by their products. I just am not a fan and never considered an IPad. JMHO.

I can do everything I need to do on a tablet device on my iPad. Flash be damned - I don’t do anything on it that needs Flash. The “no Flash” issue is one manufactured by marketing hype, and kept alive by those bigoted against anything with an Apple name on it.

The ipad 3 is due out on Feb 24th. If you can wait 60 days, it will blow away any other so called competitor.
According to some unnamed source on a rumor site.

Just a few months ago, all the rumor sites were talking about how wonderful the new iPhone 5 was going to be. Turned out that they were all wrong.

Since the original poster is looking for a replacement for his broken laptop, I doubt very much that he is interested in waiting 2 months (or maybe more if the rumor site is wrong) for a replacement unit.

I have a MacBook Pro and I love it, but I rarely use the CD/DVD drive. I used to make DVD’s of family events, but now I just put them up on YouTube.

When I’m ready for an upgrade, I will seriously consider the MacBook Air. But I might miss my 17” monitor screen.

There are also Pages and Numbers for iOS which I believe let you work with MS formats, at a very reasonable price.
