Missing ATVers found dead in Mojave Desert

(CNN) -- The bodies of two ATV enthusiasts missing since Sunday in California's Mojave Desert were found Thursday after a massive search, authorities said.

Kern County, California, sheriff's Lt. Steve Hansen said the bodies of Daniel Preddy Carbonaro, 27, and Chris Wayne Rice, 29, were found and the search was ended. He had no additional details.

Carbonaro and Rice, both of Santa Barbara, California, had traveled to a remote corner of the desert with their girlfriends, hoping to test out Rice's new 2011 Polaris ATV, family members said. The area is popular with "off-roaders," campers and recreational enthusiasts.

"I am so sad to report it is official, Dan and Chris were found deceased," said the search's Facebook page, "Friends of the Chris Rice and Dan Carbonaro search." A memorial fund was set up on the site.

The two young men left a Randsburg, California, hotel about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, telling their girlfriends where they were headed and saying they'd be back within a few hours.

“Very sad. Plunged hundreds of feet into a blind ravine in the dark.”

You put it more succinctly than the article. Terrible end to couple of young men. Yes, very sad.

Well ... having nothing to go on except MY spidey sense ... (and disregarding, but only for argument's sake ... 'cause you guys make sense too .. the comments about hiking in the desert and kids can be stupid ) ...

Let's assume a drug deal (the time is to THIS Pennsyvanian, a little suspicious ... but someone's pointed out it ain't such a bad time in the desert)

And let's assume there's enough money for a couple of girls to get ideas ..

And let's suppose those girls know the guys that are the other end of the deal

And let's suppose those other guys are more ambitious and blingy than THESE two ...

OK ... I'm gettin' slaughtered here ... you're all right .. and I'm wrong ... I confess ... I am guilty of responding to a headline without using MY head.

I'm STILL gonna' continue drinking this day and I'm STILL gonna' feel good about myself tonight ....

toMORROW, on the other hand ... may be questionable.

I kept hearing Lt. Columbo's voice as I was reading your comments. Interesting theory. I still think it was death by stupidity. Desert or otherwise, who goes out riding an ATV at 2:30 in the morning if they're sober?

Stay well.

So, you’re celebrating! Nothing wrong with having a few cocktails... as long as you keep your tushy off an ATV! LOL!

I just came back from Death Valley and I totally agree. Night time driving is completely different in the desert. Contrary to popular belief, the desert is not flat but rather pretty diverse in elevation differences. For the geographically challenged the largest escarpment is between Bad Water and Telescope Peak. From -282 to 11,495 feet in a matter of miles. Granted this is the extreme, but it is not uncommon to have cliffs drops of hundreds of feet.

These OTV’ers remind me of Darwin rules.

And that story reminds me of a idiot I went to school with. We were driving down a back road(all roads in that county were more or less back roads at that time,1959), there were about 6 or us in the car and the idiot was driving. There was a bright full moon and the idiot says, “I bet I can drive with the lights off”, and promptly turns off the lights, he thought it was great until another car,who also had their lights off, passed us going the opposite direction. That ended the great night driving experiment as the guy setting next to him turned the lights back on and we all threatened the idiot with physical harm if the turned them off again.:)

Coors? Now that is hard to believe. Getting drunk on Coors just doesn’t pass the believability test.

Stuff is like water.

As far as abandoned mines and mine shafts go, they are often near invisible deathtraps.

Many old shafts were just covered with boards, that with a good layer of dust, and maybe even a plant or two growing in the dust are indistinguishable from ordinary ground, even though stepping on the now rotten boards means you die. If you are alone, they might not find your body for years.

And that’s just death from falling. Commonly, poisonous gas is in old mines, so that even if you survive the drop, you suffocate in seconds.
