Missing ATVers found dead in Mojave Desert

(CNN) -- The bodies of two ATV enthusiasts missing since Sunday in California's Mojave Desert were found Thursday after a massive search, authorities said.

Kern County, California, sheriff's Lt. Steve Hansen said the bodies of Daniel Preddy Carbonaro, 27, and Chris Wayne Rice, 29, were found and the search was ended. He had no additional details.

Carbonaro and Rice, both of Santa Barbara, California, had traveled to a remote corner of the desert with their girlfriends, hoping to test out Rice's new 2011 Polaris ATV, family members said. The area is popular with "off-roaders," campers and recreational enthusiasts.

"I am so sad to report it is official, Dan and Chris were found deceased," said the search's Facebook page, "Friends of the Chris Rice and Dan Carbonaro search." A memorial fund was set up on the site.

The two young men left a Randsburg, California, hotel about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, telling their girlfriends where they were headed and saying they'd be back within a few hours.

Sunday, close to new moon, almost no moon light, don’t know about clouds and stars.

The beauty of being essentially a non-drinker is ... I'm a cheap date.

I drink perhaps a six-pack a year.

I'm in the mood to be a little over indulgent and I feel fine.

Maybe I'll sleep, maybe I'll puke and maybe I'll have wonderful experiences with my wife ....

I don't own an ATV, so .....

Totally agree. I’ve hiked solo and been stuck hoofing it back to my car in the dark.

I slow way down.

Too easy to step into holes, slip over a rock and break an ankle.

Depth perception and contrast are just way different when it’s dark.

Tastes like water infused with cigarette ashes to me.

I lived in nearby Ridgecrest in the late 70's for a few years. Randsburg has an old Salon that we visited a few times. Suspect the two spent time in the Salon and dropped the women off at the motel after it closed before their ill advised adventure. It can be real cold in that area this time of the year, especially if the wind is blowing.

Also seams like I recall the adjacent city of Red Mountain was notorious for its cat houses in the old mining days. Some existed until the 1950's I've been told.

My guess is a drug rendezvous/pick-up in the desert in the wee hours of the night gone wrong........

I don’t drink much either, which is why you have to make it worthwhile.

A good bottle of scotch will last me more than a year. But its good stuff.

In my area of CA(gold mine country)it borders on the insane to crawl around(or walk if possible)through the manzanita. Old mine shafts abound, most of them not covered but in the dark, or even in the daytime, it is easy enough not to see them and fall into them. Residents are aware of them but many deer hunters who come here from the valley quite often fall prey to them.

There are plenty of ways to kill yourself on an ATV during the middle of the day and 100% sober.

Dead of night, probably drunk, in the desert. Predictable outcome.

It sounds like a very interesting place. It also sounds like a location that is less than forgiving to people who don’t know it (like the cold, wind, ravines etc...).

“... the dock cable was Muslim”.

That is a theory that I didn’t even contemplate. LOL!

“And that story reminds me of a idiot I went to school
with....and the idiot was driving.....”

If that incident was what caused you to realize that
the driver was an idiot that is one thing. But, if
he was already understood to be an idiot then that
is quite another story....... ;)

I have been camping with 4 wheelers and dirt bikes many times. The past 15 years have changed it into a huge party. They bring flat beds out there and set up bands.
(I dunno about were they were but most places are the same).

It is not unusual for drunks men to take one last ride (no pun intended) at 2 or 3 in the morning.

I am sure thats what happened, they got to racing and drove off a cliff. Bummer

I used to hunt and explore down there back in the late '60s and early '70s. I would never ride an ATV around there in the dark, lots of old open mine shafts around Randsburg.

YEARS ago I was out with my family working an area just north of Baker, CA with my metal detector. I was focused on the ground as a walked up a slight mound and nearly wet myself as I found myself looking down a BLACK mineshaft. The rise evidently was dirt piled around the abandoned entrance.

I yelled for the wife to keep the kids away. I dropped a stone down and it took 3-4 seconds before I heard it hit something like a piece of tin. There were occasional bikers around and all I could think of was some guy going to shoot the ramp - and disappear for years.

Same way when I went hunting around Aspen, CO in the '50s. The folks told me to be careful of the abandoned silver mines. They pits were boarded up, but moss or other greenery grew over them and then they rotted - waiting for some poor soul to step on them.

Riding around in the desert at night on ANYTHING is asking for it.
