It was a neat idea though.
If I want distinctive doors I'll stick with the 300SL.
(actually got to drive one back when they were more of an oddity than collectors item)

Big deal. That tech is straight from GM. All my B body 1971-76 wagons use it to open the gate and glass. BMW Z3's in Germany used the same tech that they bought from GM years ago.

BTW, those are Lincoln MK VIII's that they customized the doors on. They haven't made those since 1998. I suspect that vid is quite old.

Shows several MK VIII's that haven't been made since 1998.
Side impact reinforcement is removed. Guess one could just call it a added 'crumple zone'.
Also noted that the chick in the backseat could step out 'cause the front seat was all the way forward (and both chicks were short).

If it were in a home, they would be called “pocket doors”.
Not new idea. Not a strong door, but is conserving of space.

Oddly, this was the first Mercedes I ever sat in. They weren’t that valuable in the late 70’s. Nice, but could be bought by those only slightly well off.
The next MB I sat in was my own SL!

Or it is raining. Somehow it never rains on engineers. The roll-down doors aren't too bad for rain, but gull-wing doors are a disaster. With the door up, it acts as a gutter to dump rain right into the seating area! These novel doors also are a problem with snow.

The most exotic thing I ever owned was a ‘66 Formula S Barracuda. I've always had a jones for an SL. The one I drove was owned by a pretty average guy a couple of blocks from my college dorm in ‘74. I had talked to him a couple of times and just happened to be walking by when he was leaving one day. He offered me a ride and then let me drive it back. Very nice guy, I hope he still had it when it got seriously valuable!

I saw a similar setup on a BMW convertible, 2001 in Italy. Guy was staying at the same hotel as we were and the car was parked in front. The car was a 2 seater and the doors slid right into the body.
