Tennessee tourist arrested for bringing pistol into 9/11 Memorial

A tourist from Tennessee waltzed into one of the most secure sites in the city — and politely asked a cop if she could check her weapon.

Instead, she was dragged out in cuffs.

Now, Meredith Graves, 39, is facing at least three years in prison for thinking New York’s gun laws are anything like those in the Bible Belt.

Graves, a fourth-year medical student, showed up at the memorial on Dec. 22 to pay her respects during a trip north for a job interview.

She didn’t realize that the loaded .32-caliber pistol in her purse would be a problem until she saw a sign at the site that read, “No guns allowed,” sources said.

“She remembered she had the gun on her,” a source said. She walked up to a security guard and said, “I have this gun. Where can I check it?”

The guard told her that she was in luck because of “law enforcement day” — and led her to another area.

When she got to that section, she asked another cop, “We have this gun — can we check it in here? We [my husband and I] are not law-enforcement.”

That’s when she was arrested.

Graves, who has a full legal carry permit in Tennessee, was locked up on a weapons-possession charge and held on $2,000 bond that she posted yesterday. She is due in court on March 19.

She’ll soon find out exactly how serious New York City is about illegal guns. The Manhattan DA’s Office is pursuing a conviction on felony gun possession — carrying a minimum sentence of 3 1/2 years.

Mayor Bloomberg, with the help of the five district attorneys, has crusaded against the flow of illegal guns, especially from the South.

She’s in big trouble. Bloomberg is not gun friendly.

That was a gross over-reaction on the part of NYPD and the rent-a-cop. Looks like another good reason for those of us in the Bible belt to avoid NYC, as if we needed one.

Time for another court case to take to the Supremes.

A responsible CHL holder checks the laws in the State to which they are traveling before they leave.

When I went to NY a month ago I KNEW I couldn’t carry my gun. I didn’t even need to check the laws.

For someone so bright, she is awfully stupid. First rule of traveling with your gun, know the laws of the state you are traveling to.

When my mother got a CCW because she travels, I made simple summaries of what she could and could not do, how do carry, if the CCW was reciprocated in that state, dealing with the common Indian reservations she goes through and which ones to avoid, etc. and made her a booklet. I update it for her every year, even though most times I now drive her.

I’m sorry but this lady is just incredibly obtuse. Any gun owner who doesn’t know about New York City’s horrible gun laws is simply pitiful!

Felony gun possession from the people's republic of New York will keep this woman from practicing as a physician. It may keep her from writing prescriptions for her patients and may even prevent her from obtaining a license.

There is absolutely no reason for someone from the South to go to New York.

The reaction by New York officials seems extreme. She should pay her bail then go back to her home state requiring New York to apply for extradition-which they will not do. The governor of her home state would not send her back to New York even if New York requested it.

Looks like it’s worse to carry a gun than to kill someone with it.

Terror keeps the people in line.

Graves, who has a full legal carry permit in Tennessee, was locked up on a weapons-possession charge

Article IV, Section 1, also amendment the 2nd. Plus, she did not show intent to cause any harm.

Under the law, however, she is presumed guilty and will never be innocent again...

It certainly was a stupid thing to do, but clearly this woman was not a threat to anyone.

Now, thanks to NYC's idiotic firearms laws, she will like do more jail time than most real career criminals in New York.

One of the responsibilities of having a CCW permit is knowing the laws of states and countries to which you travel, and taking care to obey them. I hope she gets a good lawyer.

Of course, you are entirely correct in your estimation and actions which are in keeping with what responsible people do. Sometimes you wonder about so-called smart people.
