Deputies arrest 2 Occupy protesters

Kokomo — Howard County sheriff deputies arrested two protesters this morning after one walked into the courthouse with a dollar bill taped over his mouth.

Members of Occupy Kokomo and similar movements around the state were protesting in front of the building this morning.

The Howard County commissioners gave permission Thursday for the group to protest on the courthouse’s east steps and lawn. Occupiers received approval to enter the building if there was inclement weather — a decision left to the discretion of the deputy in charge of security.

Rules that Sheriff Steven Rogers laid out Thursday included not wearing masks inside the building. Protesters also could not bring in sticks, like they would have with signs, Rogers said.

The initial group of four protesters who assembled about 10:30 a.m. Friday outside the courthouse — more filtered in later — carried signs made of poster board without sticks.

One of the protesters tried to walk, unmasked, into the courthouse with a poster-board sign. Deputies near the entrance turned him away, he said after re-emerging. That prompted others to head inside.

A protester who only identified himself as “Shining Spirit” was toward the front of the pack, wearing a dollar bill over his mouth, when the group entered. Protesters later said the money taped over their mouths was a “silent protest” in response to officials’ requests to avoid disrupting the courthouse’s business with noise.

When the man walked to the security check-in, Rogers told him to take off his mask.

The man responded saying he was not wearing a mask.

Rogers reached out and grabbed for the money. The man backed away and leaned toward a computer tablet he was filming with. Deputies then pushed him into a wall as another protester, Greg Lambert, appeared to have reached for the device.

A deputy shouted, “Get the [expletive] down,” as other deputies, including Rogers, forced “Shining Spirit” to the ground and cuffed him, as well as Lambert.

Officers took the men to the Howard County jail.

Attempts have been unsuccessful so far today to reach jail staff for information on the men’s preliminary charges.

Roger’s declined to comment on the incident when later contacted by phone. He said he planned to release a statement later today.

Good job. At least two shitbirds got a taste of the real world. Let us hope the same courtesy is paid to thousands more.

Now Mr. Lambert and his buddy “Shining Spirit” can OCCUPY an orange jumpsuit for the weekend while swapping recipes with their new cellmate “Bubba”.
