The animal had been preying on domestic goats, residents and authorities said.
A mountain lion that took a heavy toll on the animals in an Oak Glen petting zoo was killed on Christmas night when it returned to a sheep carcass to feed.
The 7-year-old female lion had been raiding the petting zoo at Rileys at Los Rios Rancho apple orchards. In all, 13 goats and sheep died, said Devon Riley, who owns the business in the mountains east of Yucaipa.
When the goats and sheep started to disappear in late November, California Department of Fish and Game officials investigated and determined it was the work of a cougar. The department issued Rileys a special permit to shoot the lion.
The lion would hop a fence, grab an animal and then stash the carcass in a nearby willow thicket, Riley said. To discourage the predator, the Rileys moved their animals to pens close to their home. But the attacks continued.
She just found the next spot to go to, he said. We saw her only twice, always in the middle of the night.

A few years ago at about this time of the year at about 7:30 am, one of our neighbors took her toy poodle on a walk. When she got about a half mile away, her Poodle started doing panicking and doing #1’ and 2’ all over the road, whining and trying to get into our neighbor’s arms.
Our neighbor looked down the hill and saw a large Kitty sunning itself and eyeing her poodle and herself. She got the poodle and hurried back home and told her husband.
He drove up with her and Kitty was still sunning itself.
The neighbor was a successful business man with a lot of employees, and he had a special police phone number. He dialed the number and got an officer.
When our neighbor told the officer where he was, he was informed that they were in the county not the city. He was told to dial the sheriff’s office.
He then dialed the sheriff’s department and was told unless the Kitty was endangering them, they would have to wait until after 9 and call Fish and Game. When our neighbor asked about animal control, the deputy just laughed.
A little after nine, our neighbor called F&G. He was asked if the lion was threatening anyone or pets. He told F&G what had happened and was informed to leave the kitty alone as it was a protected species.
Flash forward to mid summer, and a kitty killed a deer in our neighbor’s yard by their house and dragged it down the arroyo to eat and cache it for later dining. I had heard the cat and dying deer, but the neighbors had their ac on and didn’t hear it.
I called him the next morning, and he met me in their yard. There was deer fur/hide and blood by their bedroom window and the drag trail to and down the arroyo was very clear.
The neighbor called the city cops, who told him to call F&G. F&G told him not go down into the arroyo and to call if he saw the deer again.
Later our neighbor died from pre existing condition, and his wife did a fast sale job on their house and moved to an area far away from any woods or arroyos.
Shameful! Look at those nicotine stained canines!
How could you allow your Kitty to smoke!
a bear can easily follow the smell of poo.....yikes
You have a nice rack there daffy.....LOL
What really stinks is Florida Panthers are nothing more than ordinary North American cougars with Florida addresses. They aren't threatened or endangered, but they are legally protected.
Humph! Those are coffee stains!
Hope you had a great Christmas and New Year. GG
AgencyPersons do not care about livestock losses (not their financial loss) and the liars at the GangGreen enviro groups who claim they will pay for livestock losses have more reasons to deny payment than Obamoids have ideas for more taxes.
What really stinks is Florida Panthers are nothing more than ordinary North American cougars with Florida addresses. They aren’t threatened or endangered, but they are legally protected.
What is really being protected is AgencyPerson salaries and the investment of large scale developers whose land has been increased by acquisition of remaining land for “critical habitat” for the “Endangered Florida Panther”.
Bah! Humbuggery! And you PantherPanderers know which ones amongst your ranks I refer to.
And, in some cases the pantherPanderers
“Humph! Those are coffee stains!”
Smith is NOT amused.
