New 'silent camera' apps cause plague of voyeurism in Japan - and some are on sale in West

60 per cent rise in illicit photography

Apps let users take photos - but only show innocent-looking emails on screen

Silent camera apps already on sale in West

Most smartphone cameras have a built-in shutter noise to prevent the camera being used to take pictures without people's consent.

But a new wave of 'silent' apps - some specifically designed for voyeurism - have been blamed for a huge rise in illicit photography in Japan.

There were 1,741 incidents last year, according to a report in Mercury News, an increase of 60 per cent on the figure five years ago.

The problem is blamed on the rise in 'silent camera' applications - including ones which deliberately conceal what the user is doing by putting an innocent-looking email or text message on screen while he or she photographs.

Advance of camera technology may force women to dress modestly? If it happens, it could be a twist few foresaw.

Not sure this is any worse than all the cameras the gov is putting up.

Um, these guys aren’t interested in pictures of ladies with clothes on, modest or not. They can call it “voyeurism” but it’s plain old peeping tom perversity.

People can be fooled by an “innocent text or email” on the front? Granted, the lack of sound is something, but I never assume anyone with a phone in the vicinity is innocent. I’m not even concerned about voyeurism. I keep thinking of people snapping your PINs and such.

If you are in public, always remember there is probably someone there with a camera you can’t see. A horrid way to live, I know, but necessary in this day and age.

In public you have no expectation of privacy whether your phone click or not. I think the word plague is a little harsh...

There are voyeurism laws on the books which make it a crime to take a photo w/o permission in any situation in which the subject had an “expectation of privacy”.

They have cops out there looking for these pervs, along with the usual molesters. These new apps might fool the general public, but the cops will learn how to defeat them. They’re tech junkies, too.

Back when I still had a TV, I saw a special on an Osaka detective squad that specializes in these busts. What they do when they catch these guys is not nice. In America there would be screaming police brutality lawsuits, but in Japan, nothing.

Such an iffy law. If blinds your blinds are cracked at home, you may not be protected. Erin Andrews is protected due to a removed peep hole in a hotel room..

With or without a “silent camera” app, wouldn’t it be pretty simple to disconnect or muffle the speaker? Also, I don’t recall the video features making noise.

&&&
That would be a good outcome, but I don’t see it happening. There are too many that love the attention their plunging necklines get them.

My phone, which is old style and not an iPhone, gives the shutter sound as an option.

Is this where the women of Walmart pictures come from?

I wouldn’t call those pornography, but they aren’t Art either.

Whaaaaat?

Yeah, a lot of smartphone cameras have a built-in shutter noise. It's not there to prevent non-consensual picture taking though. It's an amusing sound effect that lets you know when the picture has been taken. It can be easily turned off on every phone I've ever seen.

“It can be easily turned off on every phone I’ve ever seen.”

Not anymore - when I got the Android update to gingerbread, that shutter noise couldn’t be turned off. Not amused.

Time to root the phone to fix that....I’m no voyeur, my dog just flips out at the shutter sound (or flash)

Jeez, how about a warning before a post like that? I don’t know if it’s better or worse that I haven’t eaten dinner yet.
