SOME CONSERVATIVES FAULT GINGRICH ‘S DECISION TO DELAY TAX -CUT ACTION
Watertown Daily Times (NY) - Wednesday, March 19, 1997
Author: Washington Post
House Speaker Newt Gingrich ‘s surprising decision to put off action temporarily on the Republicans’ tax cut has infuriated dozens of fellow conservatives , many of whom believe the move represents a dangerous gamble that could undermine Gingrich ‘s fragile hold on power.

While the speaker’s maneuver was hailed by President Clinton , who invited Republican budget leaders to a White House meeting with him today, more than two dozen conservative House members have threatened to block any budget deal unless Gingrich shifts strategy.

What’s more, Gingrich , R-Ga., is on a collision course with House Majority Leader Richard K. Armey, R-Tex., and Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, R-Miss., who fear the consequences of abandoning or downgrading a tax cut plan that once was the “crown jewel” of the Republican revolution.

“It’s a signal the speaker is willing to jettison the tax cut in the (budget) reconciliation bill that will be passed and signed by the president,” said Rep. David M. McIntosh, R-Ind., a leader of the 28 Republican dissidents. “You have a bizarre circumstance where the president has a $120 billion tax cut and the speaker said we can defer our tax cut.”

Some conservative Republicans are privately complaining that Gingrich betrayed them on an issue of paramount importance after they faithfully backed him when he admitted violating House ethics rules and was formally reprimanded and assessed $300,000. Although Gingrich and his allies insist they will still press for a tax cut - only after a balanced budget agreement has been struck - some fear that strategy will jeopardize a tax cut completely.

“Some say this could be a vote of confidence of the speaker,” a House Republican said.

GINGRICH ‘S BACKTRACK ON TAXES ANGERS CONSERVATIVES - THEY SEE GOP LEADERSHIP ADRIFT
Commercial Appeal, The (Memphis, TN) - Sunday, March 23, 1997
Author: John E. Yang The Washington Post
House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) wants this congressional session to look more like the end of 1996, when the Republicans had a flurry of legislative achievements, than the beginning, when they were blamed for shutting down the government.

That view is at the heart of Gingrich ‘s gamble in proposing - without even telling his own lieutenants - that any talk of cutting taxes be put off until the GOP cuts a balanced-budget deal with President Clinton .

While the speaker is bowing to the political realities of achieving a budget deal, he also risks alienating his conservative base.

Gingrich ‘s surprise move quickly drew protests from conservative lawmakers, who said that delaying tax cuts gives the impression that House Republicans are abandoning one of their fundamental principles.

‘’ Tax cuts are the centerpiece of our agenda, and now it looks like we’re looking for a way around it,’’ said Rep. Mark Edward Souder (R-Ind.). ‘’As it stands now, the President has more of a tax cut out there than we do - he has a budget on the table with a tax plan in it and we don’t.’’

Gingrich has little margin for error. The complaints underscore the frustration that conservatives have with the speaker and his leadership team as they struggle to run a House with the smallest majority in four decades. Moreover, some of them view Gingrich as a weakened leader who is anxious to avoid controversy because of his own recent brush with scandal.

Exprienced Leadership/legendary accomplishments = Newt Gingrich /

The 'Washington man' who is hated by the 'inside Beltway/status-quo Repubs.

As for his divorces; First wife asked for divorce; second was a 'bitxx'' (according to 'closest sources). There are lasting marriages; and many just in name only.

Why judge? He has turned his life for the better; in any event.

Not 100,000...67,000...not home schooled, cyber schooled through a PA state program. Get the facts...

He enrolled them in the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School. Under state law, a school district must pay a fee set by the state for each resident who attends a charter school.

The student’s home school district pays tuition to the cyber school, the dispute was over whether he was a resident of the district where he owns a home and pays property and school taxes. By legislative formula, home districts pay about 75 percent of what it costs them to educate students in the classroom. They also are reimbursed by the state about 30 percent of the tuition they pay to either brick-and-mortar charters or cyber charter schools.

At a meeting in November 2004, the Penn Hills School District announced that it did not believe Santorum met the qualifications for residency status because he and his family spent most of the year in Virginia. They demanded repayment of tuition costs totaling $67,000.
On July 8, 2005, a Pennsylvania state hearing officer had ruled that the Penn Hills School District had not filed objections to Santorum’s residency in a timely manner and dismissed the complaint. Later the state reimbursed the district for $55,000.

Yes, words mean things and I meant what I said. If Romney is the nominee, I will leave the office blank or vote for some worthless candidate. I’m not voting for senator Brown again either if he’s the nominee. I’m done with worthless candidates who will just advance socialism at a slower pace.

What I like most about Perry is he is a small government conservative and I don't see that consistently in any of the candidates left standing.

Will the same people who criticized Perry for supporting Rudy last time, expect Perrywinkles to overlook Santorum's support of Arlen?

I don't like any of them much.

He does NOT pull punches with Obama OR the media, and that alone is what propelled him to the top.

He only pulled punches with Pubbies, and that was his downfall.

Gingrich, without a doubt. Santorum has a record of expanding government. Medicare, Part D, No Child Left Behind. Plus, Santorum would make for an easy contrast for Obama. He already says things haven’t gotten better because Bush left such a mess. Santorum was the #3 guy in the GOP Senate for 6 of Bush’s 8 years. Obama will say, “I’m cleaning up the mess, and there’s the guy who made the mess”. I think that’s a winning point for Obama. He won’t be able to attack Gingrich so easily.

Although I criticized Perry a few times, I never complained about his endorsement of Rudy. Now, this is far from over. It is in Perry’s court. I just don’t know why he cancelled his South Carolina events. Bill Clinton received 2.5 percent in Iowa when he ran the first time and came back to win it. I do like Santorum a lot because he was my Senator and did a fantastic job. Boy he messed up by supporting Arlen and has not heard the end of it. He was punished for it though by losing his third term. Again we will see what happens. Trust me after last night, anything can happen!

Newt is a Gucci Ho. He is trying to blame Romney and romney’s PAC for his fall, but go back to Mid December, that is when Newt started rolling down hill because he is a Gucci Ho and bunch of gafts and HIS failure to get on the VA ballot.

Once Newt started falling the Romney Pac did did help Newt down the hill, but for Newt to blame negatives ads to totally bogus! Newt's fall was his own creation.

Either is fine with me. I prefer Newt because he has a shot at beating Obama. I will not vote for Romney or Paul, period.

Santorum’s ACU rating sometimes fell into the 80s and he is definitely not a Jesse Helms hardcore type conservative. But there is a lot to like about him.

Gingrich has had many lapses from conservatism and even recently referred to the “very small” number of scientists who were skeptical of global warming.

But on balance I'm leaning to Gingrich based upon his Jack Dempsey toughness in debates and ability to land repeated quick punches on Obambi’s record.

How do you see New Hampshire shaping up?

Mitt is a whore to the Republican establishment. As much as anybody, the Republican establishment gave us Barak Obama. Gingrich is a whore to anybody who waves some money in his face. He will be the easiest Republican to run a scorched earth negative campaign against, and that is all the Democrats and Obama have . . . they cannot run on their record.

My take is that Santorum is a candidate of solid values and tradition, and he does a pretty good job of articulating that, standing in exceptionally stark contrast to the Rats, who play the politics of divisiveness. I believe Santorum’s message will resonate with the American voters because they are weary of having good things regarded as bad, the bad considered good, and the country being denigrated and destroyed in the process.

Here are the facs!

Santorum's children could have been legally enrolled in VA schools where they lived, but not in PA where they did not live.

Taking any amount of money, for any educational program, from PA was wrong.

As is typical of politicians, the rules didn't apply to him and his.

It is a character issue. Santorum cheated.

Gingrich 2012

Those associated with FNC will attempt to say otherwise but...

Santorum has yet to be thoroughly vetted and racked over the coals.

Right now - nationally this is still between Romney and Gingrich. Santorum went all out in Iowa and benefitted from the negatives ads on Newt. We learned the conservatives giot scared off Newt, but didn’t go to Paul or Romney - they just went to the last conservative standing. But Santorum can’t do what he did in Iowa in NH. Romney wins NH and that race doesn’t matter. The real battle is in SC. This is where the conservatives have to make up their mind. I think Newt is a better candidate simply because he makes the better arguments. I realize many people don’t bother to listen to substance, but I’m only go by what I think is important and should be important. Whoever wins SC will be the official challenger to Romney. Newt has to be in top 2 to continue. Santorum will now be under attack by Romney and Paul. It will be a little tougher for him now. Going to get very interesting.
