This Retailer Is Doing So Well It's Opening Hundreds Of New Stores For The Fourth Straight Year
Business Insider ^ | 01/05/2012 | Kim Bashin

Dollar stores are booming in a struggling economy, and one of the big boys of the industry is doing so well it's planning another period of explosive growth, reports Gail Hoffer and Drug Store News.

It will open 625 stores and hire around 6,000 employees over the course of 2012. The discount chain already has about 9,800 stores spread across 38 states, and it's revamping 550 of those existing outlets, while building a new distribution center.

Dollar General has adopted an aggressive growth strategy since the start of the recession. This marks the fourth straight year it has opened hundreds of new locations, and the chain has created more than 21,000 jobs since 2009.

It's not all about the economy though. Dollar General had to be smart in its expansion strategy too -- after all, Walmart is its biggest competitor, and the world's largest retailer has had similar success recently.

It thrives on hitting markets that Walmart hasn't taken over, such as small towns that can't support one of Walmart's massive big box stores. It also competes with the other big dollar store chains, like Family Dollar. The hybrid concept -- somewhere between a giant discounter and a small dollar store -- has worked admirably.

I have 7 grandchildren under age 10. it’s a great place for stocking stuffers and Easter basket fillers. Two of the boys are big fans of the Superheroes and I can find all sorts of Batman, Spiderman and Superman books, puzzles etc.

Better to be quiet, smart and mobile, than to make a target out of yourself by loudly beating your chest.

Words of wisdom.

Here in Kentucky we have a lot of Dollar General Stores and more under construction. I am always happy to see them open a new location because when you go to a Dollar General you see the size of the store when you pull into the parking lot they are pretty small. Then when you go inside you are always surprised at the huge selection of items available. They are building in areas considered too small to support a Wal-Mart slowly but surely taking sales from Wal-Mart. Here is the best part of all this what can Wal-Mart do to combat this. The answer is nothing. Wal-Mart recently announced a small store concept to try to fight off this kind of competition. I predict it will be a huge flop and I hope it is. Imagine going in a mini Wal-Mart the first impression will always be that they have nothing to offer because everyone has seen the items available in a super Wal-Mart making a mini Wal-Mart a huge waste of time. Dollar General Corp may be the most well run retailer in America.

I like the dollar stores that carry the high end breads like Nature's Own, Roman Meal, etc. for $1. I go in and load up.

Twice in a row that I've replied to you, I promise, I'm not stalking.

I'm looking for a place that sells unsliced pumpernickel, I love the stuff. When I've happened across it before it's been stale, I don't have to have same day fresh but I'd like to at least have same month fresh.

Family Dollar actually has some of the lowest prices. Walmart has some of the highest prices for the exact same items.

May be so where you are but not here. The family Dollar here has brand name stuff and the same items at W-M are generally just a bit cheaper.

What Family Dollar has going for it for me is that it's closer than W-M. Also I've noticed that they have some items that appear cheaper until you compare the volume. Somewhat smaller packaging.

I will second that anecdotal observation. Many times I come home from Dollar Tree and realize the label says...Made in the USA...

Evil capitalists.

OWS would "occupy" them, but the customers would slap the snot out of them on the way in, and again on the way out.
