After 15 years of false starts and thorny casting issues, Lee Child's Jack Reacher franchise is finally on its way to Hollywood. Are Tom Cruise's shoulders broad enough to carry it?

This is going to take some getting used to. In the books, Jack Reacher is 6'5" tall. Tom Cruise is only 5'7" tall. Cruise is an excellent actor, though, and might be able to pull it off.

Child is OK with this. He has said that Reacher's size is just a metaphor for being unstoppable.

oh no, not Cruise!.....I can see several actors in that role....and Tom Cruise is not one of them.

Reacher is defined by many things, his height and powerfull physique being one!

Oh, NO, NO, NO!!! I’m just now reading my first Lee Child’s book on recommendation of a friend. I’m liking the story and I’m liking the character, Jack Reacher, and now I’ll have this visual of panty-waist Tom elfin’ Cruise who CAN NOT act, BTW! Uhg!

Judging from the incredible success Mr. Cruise has enjoyed, I’d say he’s the very definition of unstoppable.

My husband is poked on Lee Child’s books. I bought him 6 paperbacks for Christmas and he’s going through them very quickly. Can’t wait to ask him what he thinks of Cruise playing Reacher.

excellent actor

Honestly, that is a phrase which I have never before read anywhere in association with Mr. Cruise. Mind you, at least some of the scathing criticism of his acting "skills" has probably been due to his serial mis-castings in a bunch of his more "prominent" roles.

He is laughed about in Ireland for the awful brogue he tried to put on in Far and Away (as well as some very boorish behavior in Dublin while the film was being shot) and The Last Samurai was one of the most ridiculous films of the last 25 years. Jack Nicholson, a certifiably excellent actor, blew little Tommy off the screen in A Few Good Men.

Personally, I can't watch Cruise in a film without thinking of several actors who should have been cast in his part. Most of the films he's had financial success in were SFX extravaganzas, including the whole Mission Impossible series. So I'd be less than enthused about this if I were a fan of the book and the character of Reacher.

Can’t they make a CGI Tom Cruise that’s a foot taller?

They could even make him blue to pull in Avatar fans.....

Picturing Cruise as Reacher is akin to picturing Cruise as Dirty Harry. UGH

OMG! Jack Reacher would pinch Child's head off if he knew this was happening....little Tommy nancy boy as the baddest dude of the bad dudes??

I'd laugh, but this may be the end of the Reacher books which I love...every time Child's "hero" appears in the pages, the image of Cruise standing on a footstool will appear in my mind!

They just finished filming this late in the fall in Pittsburgh. They were here quite a while filming it. I did not realize this was supposed to be such a blockbuster movie. It was overshadowed by the filming here during the summer of the Batman movie. There were nonstop stories about that all summer long. Two big blockbuster movies filmed in Pittsburgh. That’s pretty cool.

My pick for the role is Jason Momoa, Drogo in "Game of Thrones", 6'5"

Contrast him with Tommy boy.

Now THIS is Jack Reacher!

I may Die Trying to accept Cruise in this role. Maybe there is No Way Out but whoever cast Tom in this role is Running Blind. Childs should have included a Tripwire in the contract to avoid what for many of us Reacher fans looks like Bad Luck and Trouble. Maybe the movie will be the Persuader that gets me to accept this but it’s going to be The Hard Way. It seems that Without Fail, Hollywood screws up good books. They had One Shot to cast this series and they blew it as usual. I know it’s only a movie and not Worth Dying For and like all movies will be Gone Tomorrow but it’s like The Enemy of macho leading men decided to leave the simplicity of Reacher on The Killing Floor and substitute Mission Improbable special effects. I can hear the pyrotechnics Echo Burning in my ear already. Probably won’t be able to hear for 61 Hours after this one. But what the hell, I’ll probably see it. After all I’ve got Nothing to Loose.

The Left does not approve of the sentiments found in Jack Reacher. So they will use any actor to try to defuse it. If they could get Alan Alda to do it, they would.

My guess is the best actor for Jack Reacher in the Left's eyes would be Woody Allen.

Tom Cruise is not it, you need an Arnold Swarchsnegger or someone with Rippling Muscles to do it and Jack Reacher is known to eliminate his enemies with his bare hands.

Jack Reacher doesn’t need a box office draw, he needs a man to play him, a big man.

Picking Cruise shows me the production company has no idea how to do this.

Like George Segal, though a fine actor, ruined The Quiller Memorandum.

Maybe they’re planning on a parody like the Dean Martin “Matt Helm “ series.

As it happens, Dean Martin would have been an excellent choice to play Helm if the series had been done straight. He’d showed he could do a good job in dramatic roles, and some aspects of his own personality can be found in the character as written by Donald Hamilton.

Jack Reacher is 6'5" tall. Tom Cruise is only 5'7

John Rhys Davies is over 6 ft tall but in Lord of the Rings he played a dwarf.........Movie technology today can not only create Cruise's height but it can also make him look and sound intelligent.......

Its a shame Dolph Lungren is a bit on the old side, I would think he would be a pretty good actor to play Jack Reacher.

And I am a very good fan of every book.

Tom Cruise will kill it, they need the character just right, has to be a big man, a loner that is bad enough to crack heads of the best of the best and that means Seals, Rangers and any other really tough guys.

Yes , he would have done a terrific job. Was a little old to play it straight by then though.

I watch a lot of ‘40s and ‘50s ‘cinema’ these days and I was thinking which of those actors would fit the role of Reacher- and nearly ALL of them would!

“Private Ryan”... 12 years ago.

No wonder they’re casting a “box-office draw” metrosexual for Reacher... bet there’s lots of cool special effects and sex scenes too. They’ll make a fortune.

(LOL! Yeah, I don’t think much of today’s movies.)

It's funny you mention that in the context of this thread. Waaaay back in the early 90's when it was announced that Tom Cruise had been chosen to play LeStat in Interview With The Vampire, I specifically recall telling a friend that Lundgren would have been a far superior choice....

A Tough Guy's Tough Road to the Screen (Tom Cruise as Lee Child's Jack Reacher)

Cruise is too tiny to be Jack Reacher. They need to find someone who looks like Clint Walker in his heyday.

You know what, as far as I know he is still alive and kicking.

Now another actor I could see possibly as good is Bruce Willis, he may not be as big as needed but he does have the character about right.

As far as a younger actor the one who played Captain America I think would be a good choice as well. But..he is much younger, Jack Reacher I think should be something around late thirties or close to 40 if i remember right.
