{VANITY} I am sick of google! Looking for a relevant search engine, opinions wanted!

The time was that yahoo answered most basic searches sort of well. And then along came google, and for a while they looked like the gold standard. But lately the SEO games and massive quantity of stuff online has made simple queries painful. Anyone have a better set of search engines for the DIY or how to crowd?

I've given up on search because I've pretty much found everything I've been looking for on the Internet and I only regularly visit a handful of sites on the Internet that are bookmarked - the Free Republic being one of them. I think the last time I had to go out and hunt for something was when I needed a USB device to convert my audio tapes to MP3. I found it at Amazon and ordered it. That was the holy grail that allowed me to convert the rest of my music collection to MP3.

Nowadays, I do a lot of book reading. I was just in the library today and got a book on Eisenhower and another book on railroads during the 1800s. I'm thinking about getting a Kindle and just dumping a bunch of books onto it so I can go ahead and get them read.

Since I switched to bing, virus problems are gone.

The primary problem with Bing is the incessant upgrades. I come in to the office and have to wait 5 minutes to hop on Free Republic while Bing reconstitutes its self

I have the most boring searches it doesn’t matter who knows. Heck it even bore’s me when I see them on the side of the screen. I also use Bing, I hate it when you type something simple in and it gives you 2,000,000 things to choose from. I don’t even know 2,000,000 things..

Good luck with that.

All the search engines seem to use variations of Google's link-ranking algorithm (if they don't simply steal their results from Google) and, thus, are vulnerable to SEO games. E.g., I just looked up santorum on Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yandex, and DogPile, and they all exhibit the poor senator's long-standing google problem. Actually, it's so bad now, that if you simply google for google problem, Santorum is all over the SERP.

BTW, the Wikipedia has a lengthy search engine list.

Ah, but if you read all 2,000,000 search results, just imagine how smart you'll be (just kidding!)

There are ways to narrow your searches so that you don't get so many results. Making your search criteria more specific helps a lot.

Google's become it's antithesis. It used to be clean, simple, reliable, uncluttered. Now you can't move the mouse without something jumping up to distract you. Drives people up a wall.

Thank God for creative destruction.

DuckDuckGo is GREAT. Private, does not “bubble” you, has secure (https) features (so your ISP does not know what you search for either).

https://duckduckgo.com/?kh=1&k1=-1

Many great features. I love it. The results are also very good. I rarely have to resort to other engines to find what I want.

From their privacy page:

“DuckDuckGo does not collect or share personal information. That is our privacy policy in a nutshell. The rest of this page tries to explain why you should care.

* Why You Should Care - Search Leakage
* Why You Should Care - Search History
* Information Not Collected
* Information Collected

My default search engine is Bing. When I started using Google it was one of the cleanest search engines around. Several of its predecessors planted advertising spyware in your computer. But that has gradually changed over the years, as they have grown more and more intrusive.

I occasionally use google as a backup if Bing doesn’t find what I’m looking for.

What device did you use? I have about 700 tapes I want to convert and being a tech idiot and I am being very challenged by this.
