(CNN) -- "I'm just gonna put a little more butter in there, y'all," she said as she plopped a large chunk into the skillet. "Oh my," she added, "I've gone and put a whole stick in by now."

I was watching Paula Deen on the Food Network, whipping up a shrimp sauté to go over pasta. I thought to myself, "I could make a similar dish that would look much better (hers was murky from all the butter), taste much better (fresh, clean flavors from a small amount of extra-virgin olive oil, garlic, dry vermouth and herbs), with a fraction of the fat and calories."

Forget Novo Nordisk. Show your loyal fans how not to need diabetes drugs.

For me, this is the money sentence in the article. People need to understand that they can reverse diseases caused by the typical American diet by simply moving to a whole food, plant based diet. Let's see the shill, Paula Deen try that for a year.

Screw that. I want butter, pork and salt!

If my health changes or my loved ones, my opinion will change.

Until then, my habits and that of my family doesn’t change because some TV person[s] develops an issue.

Actually, a very lean pork cut is better than a chicken breast and we are not and don’t intend to go vegetarian.

Gah! This is so annoying. Pfffft! on them and their whoring of this story!!!

Made scalloped potatoes last night. Left out the butter. Tasted like crap. Added butter!! Wow! Wow!!

Butter is a gift from God.

I'm laughing because ALL these healthy shows, like Oz...are selling everything under the sun. It's all about marketing.

We're living into the late 70's and beyond...and these are the meat and potato folks.

Knock yourself out, but pork and poultry are equally bad for the huiman body. It doesn’t matter. Animal protein contains cholesterol, which the body does not need in excess of what it creates itself.

That's because of all the bread, pasta, pizza, and sweets. Cut those to the minimum and all the animal fats don't matter a bit. At least that's been my experience.

Cut those to the minimum and all the animal fats don't matter a bit.

They matter on the inside. Dietary cholesterol, colon cancer, heart disease. All attributed to animal protein (beef, poultry, pork, fish dairy)

I think you're right. I drink no soda (just milk), no chips, a few sweets (chocolate) and a loaf of bread lasts me a month at least.

I weigh the same as I did when I was 18 (110 lbs - 5'4")...50 years ago.

Pssst....COUNT CALORIES!!!

My mother ate what she wanted to and cooked with butter, fried stuff...and had 3 pills left from the first Rx for her heart...the only Rx she took, ad she lived to be 94.

My 101 year old aunt ate what she wanted, when she wanted.

I think we have teeth that says we eat meat. (yeah my grammar sucks)

I’m at the age I am heading for ‘the change’ so I am battling weight most all the time now.

I must say the weight-watchers online thing is wonderful! Eat whatever you want just log it and it counts for points. Lose or maintain, it is so simple and perfect.

This opened my eyes as to the chicken-pork difference. I would have thought chicken breast so much better. Not so. A very lean pork is better.

Anyhow, I don’t intend to go vegetarian or pile that on an unwilling family. I like my meat and my family loves and expects my cookin’ that includes meat—nom nom nom. :)

I do admit to less butter and more olive oil and stuff like that. Though, I still use a good ham-bone for beans and salt-pork is still on the charts, too.

Chicken can’t be fried without a whole bunch of oil...ha! And we love us some good Sunday fried chicken! Though none of it is anythang as good as what Granny fried up. :9

My sister tried that vegetarian thang, funny she lost weight and then after ‘bout a year, she started to plump up on it. I eat everything under the sun—still not plumped to the vegetarian sister healthy *whatever*. hahaha!

Land O’ Lakes has a spreadable butter with Olive oil already in it. Tastes good too.

I guess it has to be healthy since it has that Olive oil in it.

Me too! You only live once-—why go through life eating like a rabbit?

I will be heading to Savannah on St Patrick’s week and I will make a special point of visiting Paula’s restaurant for some of that high-caloric deliciousness!

My mom was drug free...lived to 90. Ate everything bad for you....but no soda or chips. (She LOVED bacon.) Always amazed me.

My whole family was that way. Still have 2 aunts in their mid 80's.

Agreed.

IMHO the villains are the huge amounts of sugars/carbs and the bad/hydrogenated/trans fats that are the staples of the StandardAmericanDiet : o Simple carbs send my body on a blood sugar roller coaster that makes me hungrier rather than full : / Fewer, more complex carbs with some good fats and a little protein thrown in and I am good to go almost all day -

Now, I also believe every one is a little different blood chemistry wise, so your mileage may vary.

May God guide our course.

One contributing factor is smoking (tobacco). When everyone smoked, the general population was leaner.

Oral gratification and a mild stimulant seems to be an exceptional appetite suppressant.

In our anti-tabacco fervor, we have inadvertently created a new problem. Aint "unintended consequences" a b#tch! Kinda like a 1% income tax that destroyed the greatest nation ever known.
