McDonald's proposal divides healthy Loma Linda

Without a single liquor store, and legally smoke-free for nearly three decades, the tiny hillside town of Loma Linda brims with pride about its devotion to health and spiritual well-being.

So news that the first McDonald's was coming to town, with its special-sauce-slathered Big Macs and 500-calorie sheaves of large fries, has triggered enough political reflux to put City Hall on the defensive.

"McDonald's does not fit the Loma Linda brand of health and wellness," said Dr. Wayne Dysinger, head of preventive medicine at the medical school. "Compare it to smoking laws: There's no question that smoking is harmful to people's health. Exposing people to fast food also is harmful to their health."

That healthful lifestyle is a core tenet of the Seventh-day Adventist faith, which is woven through the San Bernardino County town of 21,000, from the Adventist-run Loma Linda University Medical Center to a City Council governed exclusively by church members. There's even a Loma Linda line of vegetarian food, produced by the same company that makes Morningstar Farms vegan burgers.

Along with being vegetarian, most Adventists shun tobacco, alcohol and fancy dress. They are quick to brag about being home to the healthiest, and longest-living, folks in the nation. National Geographic in 2005 identified Loma Linda as one of the world's four "blue zones" — towns with greatest number of people living healthy lives into their 90s and past 100. The others were Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; and Nicoya, Costa Rica. "It's a great point of pride that their commitment to health is paying off," said Dysinger.

For 81 years, the post office didn't deliver mail on Saturdays, the Adventist Sabbath, opting for Sunday instead. The postal service ended that policy last spring in a cost-cutting move, which faithful Adventists took as another slap at their traditions.

“McDonald’s does not fit the Loma Linda brand of health and wellness”

Then don’t eat there, the World doesn’t revolve around you.

I assume the following does not apply to this community but, why is there not a ban on pre-marital sex, abortions, and homosexuality. Truly, these things are proven to cause long term harm, early death, and cost society huge sums of money. The Progressive/Marxists have got to know that the propaganda machine they have built, could one day be turned against them. One day soon, before this PC stuff is trashed, the true effects of govt rule of personal behavior will be revealed in all its glory.

Bingo! And these nosy busybodies should let the people in Loma Linda make that decision. If they all feel the same way, McDonald’s will not do enough business there to remain open.

Dear Mickey D's, build it and they will come.

Betcha there are many residents of Loma Linda who stop at a McDonalds when they are out of town.

Who then die, just like everyone else. As for me and my house, we'll have a cigar.

Goodness! No one in this town ever dies, I suppose—what with all that healthy living, and all.

It might be interesting to see the death rate there, and the ages of the people when they die. That way, we could see if they are truly on to something.................or not!

This concern from the LA Times? If they are really concerned about helping people, the LA Times should shut down and quit putting out that vapid dreck that they pass off as news.

Capitalism at its best. Build a Mickey D’s, pay taxes, hire people. It will either work or it won’t.

Their fear is it will work and The Vegan Grill will have to close its doors. Then Mickey D will sell a McVegan, extra sprouts for no extra cost.

The very first McDonald's built by the McDonald Bros. is in the very same San Bernadino County as Loma Linda. I'm 70 yo and have eaten at McDonald's since a small child. Not over weight, low blood pressure, don't have a cholesterol problem.

I do have a rare lung disease. Maybe all those fries caused....

With all those “temptations” banned, they don’t actually live longer, it just seems that way to them.

This is not about "progressive/marxists," this is about a town ruled by Seventh Day Adventists. Loma Linda is famous for its virtual theocracy.

You will have a hard time finding a city anywhere in the country that has a more solid conservative voting record than Loma Linda. If your kid is sick Loma Linda Children’s Hospital is on of the best in the world. Leading the world in infant heart transplantation.

They would strongly disagree, and assert that the world does indeed revolve around them; and that their opinions are the only ones that matter.

Importantly, the truth though is that it is extremely difficult to forbid a restaurant from a city. Its zoning is ordinary, and the site they choose will likely already be zoned for business. The state, not the city, approves the health license for a restaurant to function.

Best of all, McDonalds has a legion of lawyers who could chew the city to ribbons if it tried sneaky means of prohibiting them.

McDonalds is food-porn. Fatty, greasy, and essentially all of their offerings are animal carcasses. I don’t object to a town saying “Go elsewhere to eat that slop!”

Before you reply with the usual photos, meat extolling, and personal insults, I ask you to do one thing.

Look down at your belly, and imagine your heart coated inside and out with the same fat deposits. I am watching fat people here in Appalachia limping, hobbling, and dying in their 40s because of their addiction to fast fat food. Sad.
