Pop star Seal and supermodel Heidi Klum have decided to split, the two said in statements released by their publicists.

"While we have enjoyed seven very loving, loyal and happy years of marriage, after much soul-searching we have decided to separate," the statements said. "We have had the deepest respect for one another throughout our relationship and continue to love each other very much, but we have grown apart."

Seal and Klum have four children together -- Leni, Henry, Johan and Lou.

If that is a picture of Heidi Klum, Seal, and their daughter, I think I may see a reason why they separated. Usually, the children of Africans are considerably darker. (Seal’s mother is Nigerian, making Seal a true African.)

Other than “Kiss From a Rose”, I am not familiar with Seal’s work.

No real reason to know. Heidi Klum is a model (born German, now an American citizen) who is now into fashion and is the host of a reality cable TV show featuring amateur fashion designers. Seal (which is his real first name) is a British-born R&B singer.

If Klum or Seal are interviewed in TV, they appear intelligent. Of course, I've never heard them asked about the neutrino theory of stellar collapse in type 2 supernovae.

Oh. Oh. I know about the fashion show because it gave the world the ubiquitous Tim "Make it Work" Gunn. He's everywhere.

If there were but one genetic loci where skin color was determined then one might speak of the allele (or variation)for dark skin being “dominant” to a “recessive” allele for light skin - but it is more complex than that.

Let us assume there are 10 genetic loci that largely determine skin color and they are either “off” (light skin) or “on” (dark skin)- then the blackest person you ever saw has around 18 out of 20 “on” (each loci has two copies) and the whitest non albino white person you ever saw has maybe 4 out of 20 “on”.

If these two people had a child they would have an average of about 11 out of 20 “on” and would be more brown than black or white.

Also just by random assortment two people with only 4 out of 20 loci “on” could have a child with 8/20 or as few as 1/20 - depending upon which “on” loci they shared in common.

That explains why children from the same parents can often have very different skin color.

I'm assuming that's a cultural reference to Project Runway. I have to plead ignorance; PR's one of those topics that falls into my 'shallow knowledge' category. It's a rather large category.

Skin color, as someone pointed out in an earlier post, results from the contribution of more than one gene. I remember reading an article by a black ABC news anchor, who said that she had to produce ID in the hospital to see her own daughter--because the child had blond hair and blue eyes, and the anchor was fairly dark. But in general, a child's skin color is somewhere between his/her parent's colors.
