NHL.COM ^ | 1/24/12 | By Adam Kimelman

Hockey fans won't have to move far from their television to catch all the happenings during All-Star Weekend in Ottawa.

A four-day hockey extravaganza starts Thursday at 5 p.m. ET on the NHL Network with NHL Live: At the 2012 NHL All-Star Weekend. The two-hour show will feature a number of this year's All-Stars as well as other key personalities from around the hockey world.

That leads into the NHL Network's hour-long 2012 NHL All-Star Player Fantasy Draft preview show at 7 p.m., where the Network's cast of analysts will make their selections before Team Chara and Team Alfredsson make the official ones.

At 8 p.m., the players will be front and center for the 2012 NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft. Daniel Alfredsson and his assistant, Henrik Lundqvist, will put their selection skills to the test against Zdeno Chara and his assistant, Joffrey Lupul. Who will be the first player picked? Who will be the last? Will teammates be separated? Will brothers? Watch the drama unfold on the NBC Sports Network in the United States and TSN in Canada.

(snip)

On Sunday, the stars will light up Ottawa when they take the ice for the 2012 Tim Hortons NHL All-Star Game (4 p.m., NBCSP, CBC). The NHL Network's pregame show starts at 1 p.m. Immediately following the game, NHL Tonight will have a recap of the game and analyze all the happenings from the NHL's mid-season extravaganza.

Just wondering if there will be coverage of the suntan competition among the players who bugged out to the Bahamas?

I watched the skills competition for the first time last year, IMHO that is much more fun to watch than the actual game.

The All-Star game is a poor representation of a true hockey game. The NHL should try an outdoor All-Star game just once to see if ratings are enhanced or if interest among the die-hards is elevated. Otherwise, the Olympics are more interesting than this one event.

I would love to see an outdoor All Star game!

The Commissioner seems to think keeping the number of outdoor games to a minimum makes it more of a draw for spectators who aren't regular fans.

I strongly disagree. But I disagree with Bettman on many things.

The Winter Classic looks like it is an annual event that is here to stay. I wouldn't go that route with an outdoor All-Star Game but as a one-time special occasion, I think it could work. It would showcase the game's stars, too. Promote the heck out of it for more than a year if needed. My guess is the NHL wouldn't want the extra workload for an “exhibition” but they had a pre-season outdoor game in Las Vegas a few years back. The All-Star Game isn't competitive, the Winter Classic charm would add to the ASG weekend.

Yawn. Much like the star-player on my beloved Caps... I think I’ll be sitting this one out. They really haven’t done anything to spice up these games in a looooong time. The last time I actually felt a “holy-s**t!” moment about an All Star Game was when Owen Nolan called his shot during the game. They need to do something to let the players really showcase their skills... and the “skills” competition certainly isn’t it...

I hope eventually they hold the Winter Classic in a large college stadium.

Maybe somewhere in Michigan or Minnesota.

Put it where they can seat 100,000 fans! Wouldn’t that be awesome!?!

I want to see who gets picked last. Last year Phil Kessel was genuinely pissed about it. I hope Chara picks Thomas first, he’s the man.

Chara has good taste; he picked the best hockey team player in the game today as his #1 choice.

Couture: most underrated. Great two-way forward, but in ASG, defense doesn’t matter much.

P.S. - no Devils in sight, when’s the last time that happened? Prob. when they were still the Rockies.

Alfredsson picked several of his Ottawa buddies instead of picking according to talent.

I suspect Chara did the same. Still, both are pretty good teams! ;^)

I'm pissed.

I don't have satellite or cable. But I do have NHL Gamecenter thru my ROKU. So I've paid $160 directly to the NHL and they're not showing any of the ASG material on NHL Gamecenter. What kind of crap is that!?!?
