When the hundreds of thousands of Penn State alumni hear the name JoePa, they think of moral leadership, of the kind of person they aspire to be. Of his warmth, his fatherliness, his steadiness, and his granite character. Joe Paterno was for hundreds of thousands of alumni the very model of the moral ideal of Western humanism.
Hundreds of thousands of alumni think a huge injustice was committed against JoePa by the board of trustees, and they have emphatically expressed their sentiments to the new interim president of Penn State during his coast-to-coast series of alumni meetings to damp down the great anger he is encountering.
First news of the Sandusky scandal, in which longtime defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was accused of sexually molesting underage boys, broke in March 2011, and it came before the board of trustees that June. They said it was not a Penn State problem, because Sandusky had left the university in 1999, though he continued to use an office there for several more years. It was a problem for the institution Sandusky had founded, the Second Mile organization for youngsters.
Then, quite suddenly in November 2011, with a huge national scandal erupting, the board suddenly acted as if the burden were on them. They did not weigh their own responsibility, their own inaction, their own failure to get to the bottom of the scandal of five months earlier. In a fit of what to many alumni seems to have been fear for themselves, the board’s members ducked their own responsibility, and in the most ignoble and impersonal way, made JoePa, the moral giant of Penn State, a moral outcast.

The guy is absolute scum who thought football more important than a bunch of “at risk” youth. Only if they could play football was Paterno interested in them as a person - otherwise Sandusky could do what he wanted with them.
If he didn't think McQuerry’s report was credible - why was McQuerry hired onto the team for the next decade? If he was credible - then what was Sandusky doing parading young boys around “happy” valley for the next ten years.
Paterno is absolute scum - as is those members of Penn State and the community who saw and see nothing wrong with the events as they happened in regards to the decades long inaction of a man who enabled pedophilia and allowed it to go on right under his nose and said nothing - because to him football was more important.

Actually, there is a second, sane response: beat the living piss out of the perp, THEN go to the police.
Paterno goes to "the Chain of command", and says "Jerry Sandusky has been seen manboy-loving in Penn State showers ..." and finishes.
Option 1: "... investigate this"
Option 2: "... cover this up"
Which option did he choose? we can only go by what subsequently happened.

Sandusky was not an employee at the time. If Paterno falsely accused a private citizen based on a vague charge by an assistant coach(Paterno saw nothing and there are questions as to what McQueary actually told him)and that charge was proven wrong...Paterno could be sued into oblivion. Paterno took the witness to those who could investigate. Paterno was the ONLY one at PSU who did what he was supposed to.
This is going to get more interesting as the facts reveal Corbett (gov of PA) was AG and in charge of the investigation in '09.

Hogwash. Paterno heard what Sandusky was alleged to have done, Paterno covered his own tail by reporting something into his chain of command, and nothing else. His responsibility (and McQueary's) was to keep reporting until Sandusky was led off in handcuffs.
Since his job and Penn State's football program was more important that those kids, they just kept going and left Sandusky to keep up his evil.
Joe Paterno and all the other people in that school who allowed that scum to stay uncaught are culpable, period.
Joe Paterno could not have taken this complaint anywhere but to his superiors at the university. He didn’t witness anything.
Last year, my daughter was involved in a traffic incident that was not her fault. She told her boss, a vice principal at the local high school about it and the woman told her to report it to the police, just to cover herself. She tried, but the police station didn’t open until 9:00 AM. Later that day, the other girl’s mother called the police and reported. So, the vice principal reported that my daughter told her she had been involved. My daughter got a ticket for hitting the other girl, even though it was not her fault and the evidence was that my daughter had told the vice principal that she had been involved.
The judge had a fit and through it out of court, saying that vice principal and the police officer had no business writing a ticket for something that neither witnessed.
That Paterno received a credible report more than 10 years ago that Sandusky was sexually abusing a young boy in the shower?
That Paterno then hired the guy who reported it to him and he worked for Paterno for the next ten years - making it look like Paterno thought he was credible?
That Sandusky continued to parade around youth from his “Second Mile” so called charity for “at risk” youth for the next ten years - while Paterno KNEW what they were actually “at risk” for?
That Paterno saw, for the next ten years, after a very credible report of shower sodomy from someone he would pursue a working relationship with over that time, Sandusky continuing to parade young boys around the campus and events in “Happy” valley?

Exactly. Even at the college level, if this was the head of the chemistry department, or the dean of off-campus studies, no one would shed a tear at his firing. But because it's the F*O*O*T*B*A*L*L C*O*A*C*H we are all supposed to be heartbroken.
Much the same mentality that says torturing animals is OK if and only if the torturer also happens to be a star NFL quarterback.
