Word For The Day, Thursday, February 2, 2012 - peroration
dictionaries ad nauseam | Groundhog Day 2012 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

peroration \per-uh-REY-shuhn\ , noun
1. A long speech characterized by lofty and often pompous language.
2. Rhetoric. The concluding part of a speech or discourse, in which the speaker or writer recapitulates the principal points and urges them with greater earnestness and force.

Example sentences:
Thus he apostrophised his house and race in terms of the most moving eloquence; but when it came to the peroration—and what is eloquence that lacks a peroration?—he fumbled. He would have liked to have ended with a flourish to the effect that he would follow in their footsteps and add another stone to their building.
-- Virginia Woolf, Orlando: A Biography

This person always provides a dramatic peroration; it is expected of him and he seldom disappoints. Tamsour is the theme; and the substance is usually personal aggrandizement, sometimes a bit of self-pity, but never apologies for past misdeeds, real or imaginary.
-- Jack Vance, Night Lamp

Etymology:
Peroration comes from the Latin word perōrātiōn which meant "a closing speech."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

He would later play the same position for the University of Maryland Terrapins after being awarded a basketball scholarship. He is not to be confused with the baseball player of the same name. Nevin was sharing a dormitory suite with teammate Len Bias at the time of Bias' death, [1] which reached world headlines.
Michael Chioldi, Class of 1987, operatic baritone and Broadway actor [2].
Michael J. Travaglia, Class of 1976, one of two convicted murderers in the fabled 1979-80 "Kill for Thrill" murder spree in western Pennsylvania that left four dead during the New Year's Eve holiday between 1979 and 1980. He is currently awaiting execution on Pennsylvania's Death Row [3].
Scott Long, Class of 1997, Star of CBS Big Brother 5 and 7. Actor and reality TV star. Played football in college for the University of Pittsburgh.
George W. Oberdorf, Class of 1996, International opera singer based out of Phoenix, Arizona. Also a noted conductor.

Also drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the 5th round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Michael W. Sheetz, class of 1982. Author of "Kill for Thrill", ISBN 978-1596294981 a book about the 1979-80 killing spree. Also an attorney and criminal justice professor in the Miami, Florida area.

Lesko and Travaglia are going to die of natural causes before they ever get put to death. They still pop up in the news periodically. Supposedly all of the appeals, re-sentencings, etc. that can be done have been, yet they still have lawyers filing stuff.

Peroratation.

During a perspicacious and perspiration perfused peroration a permutation of pettifogging profession produced a profound pronation of perambulation.

And someone else from a few years later at Kiski cashed in on the murders by writing a book.

No, not a lot of groundhog awareness here. (Did you see the chocolate Punxsy Phil I tweeted?) The weather is pleasant, 82 degrees or so. No one is anxious for “winter” to be over.

OK, why don’t I remember the guy that played basketball for Maryland? He graduated in my year, and I would have seen him play.

Huh, you made me look up a guy I went to high school with. He was a bit older, but I recall knowing one of his friends and talking to him a number of times. He and his brother, who pulled the trigger, killed a NYS trooper back in 1980. Last year, they were again denied parole.

LOL! Thank You. I grew up in MA, and know the elitist well.

I “left that other site” in 2007 because I refused to toe the GOPe line and vote for Romney.

I am so glad I did, otherwise I would not have found a home here on FR! :-)

I think they make some of that stuff up, just like the names I have to listen to on the weekends, which are usually full of misplaced apostrophes.
