Good morning gardeners! Red Devil here. JustaDumbBlonde and her husband are on their way up to Montana for a well deserved vacation. She should be able to post the thread from her remote Montana location next week.  I am sure she will continue with her plans for a soil structure thread next week. Her Thread subjects are so informative and interesting. Although I have not been real active on the thread, I read each and every post. Y'all have been doing a great job!

I should be able to get some sort of a  garden going this year, at our new location in the Marshall, Tx area. Crossed fingers on the garden! Peggy has done a super job of juggling her new job at a Shreveport Wal-Mart with all the running around to find a house, with a nice sized fenced in back yard, and getting the utilities turned on. It has been real hectic and energy draining for her. What a great Wife and partner! I am one lucky guy!

Lets get gardening!

Crab grasses are a real problem in Texas. Up where you are...I can’t remember the name of the tall, grassy weed... but if you pull it out wrong, it sprouts more and more tall grassy weeds. UGH. I lived a little north of Dallas and nothing short of crawling around on hands and knees performing extensive weed extraction helped get rid of those things.
It’s been so warm this season that grass is now starting to grow in San Antonio and my neighbors on either side are popping crab grass that is seeding like crazy. It’s all I can do to keep it from my weed free lawn. The birds are nesting and my begonias never faded from summer!

Good luck and welcome to Texas!!

I have been watching the weather and y’all are supposed to be getting pummeled with big time snow! It has been raining here all morning and was supposed to get up to 70° here today but I doubt it gets out of the 60s.

Great that you got a new mower! Glad you will get to ride and mow now! I will have to haul mine back and forth between here and Texas to keep our property here in Ms groomed.

In SW Ohio, it looks like mid-March. Buds are swelling. Spring bulbs are growing, catnip is actively growing, some roses have broken dormancy, and daily temperatures have been in the 40s and 50s. Accuweather is projecting that they will stay in this range for the next 2 weeks.

I am thinking about trying some cold-tolerant salad greens. It's been that warm.

Your prayers are powerful. My doctor prescribed a diuretic (instead of a needle in the knee) and another week of rest! He also said I ould postpone a planned colonoscopy for a couple of weeks (Yay!) which means that I can take aspirin and Aleve and stuff like that. I feel better already. All in all it has been a good day!

Thank you.

Any plans for curtailing your complaining neighbor? Does he dislike your architecture? Animal noise? Smells? Or, is he just a jeolous curmudgeoun who hates the fact that you have pretty birds and he has none?

Sorry about your chicken and duck mini-holocaust. That’s awful. Glad to hear you are re-building and getting more ducks. Will you be giving some of the ducks the axe? For your dinner table and freezer? Duck eggs sound good?

ouch! Prayers up for you!

During the winter, my aunt keeps a large salt shaker of sand in her coat pocket. When she has to cross over an icy patch, she’ll shake sand in front of her to walk on... I have a shaker, just need the sand. Too old to fall down like that anymore.

LOL! With the mild-to-no winter we’ve had, I think any of us could have made that prediction!

C’mon, Spring!

Well, I bought two more Bonnie tomatoes, Goliath (bush with large fruit) since none of my heirloom dealers have anything in stock other than pansies and herbs. Both the Goliaths and the Tami G grape maters are flowering, and I’m hand-pollinating so I’m expecting March 1 fruit to pick.

Last year’s robust pepper plants never died and are sending large side-shoots, so I may have salsa by Easter!

That’s a good idea. I’ve lived here 27 years and have never fallen on the ice before. It didn’t even look icy, but that’s where it get’s you.

I’d grow by seed but I’m just not as good as professional growers. Have a neighbor out here in Volente who grows strawberry, tomato and other plants for sale - good ones - she
sells at the Firehouse market day every quarter.

For some reason I have had very good luck growing Jalapeno peppers and basically any type of hot pepper but my bell peppers have been a disappointment. I did have good results with some Pimiento Peppers last year they were beautiful big red ones. Pick them green and they are the same as a green bell pepper.

I roasted them in the oven and peeled the skins off and then caned them. I use them for color and slight flavor in stir fries and such.

Roasted and peeled.
