NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — Unusually cold weather, plunging temperatures to 31 degrees below zero in some areas, is expected to continue sweeping across Europe in coming days after causing hundreds of deaths in Eastern Europe and air-traffic delays in London and elsewhere.

January has been the ninth-snowiest month since 1966 for Europe and Asia, though for the entire northern hemisphere, it’s been about average for snow this season, according to Associated Press.

London’s Heathrow Airport, Europe’s busiest, cancelled half its flights Sunday, officials said. London’s Gatwick Airport received less snow and as of Sunday planned to run all scheduled flights.

In Ukraine, freezing temperatures have killed at least 131 people during the nine-day cold spell, many of them homeless, while the death toll in Poland reached 53, reports said.

Obviously, it’s so cold in Europe because of global warming.

Well, they do have that Stonehenge thing in Britain, right? Maybe we need to add a new stone...

Amongst many other things, it will be interesting to see the effect of this cold on wind turbines in western Europe. I suspect they’ll all have to be shut down. If they have the latest deicing tech; they will likely be O.K. OTOH, we might hear of huge sheets of ice being flung hither, thither and yon.

It’s very warm here in Massachusetts. We had a high of more than 50 degrees today, which is almost unheard of.

For average global temperatures to be rising, there must be someplace on the earth that is a million degrees by now. I wonder where it’s hiding?

Note that I said we could “add” a new rock (to Stonehenge)?

As long as the Siberian Express (jet stream) is over Europe and Asia, and the continental US remains warm, the global warming Kool-Aid drinkers will say that all the warm weather in the US is the result of manmade global warming. And the US weather stations, of which there are many more than anywhere else in the world, will appear to back them up. However, watch out if the jet stream shifts and makes a trip down to the lower 48 - we may yet have a cold late February and March.

According to St. Al Gore, the core of the Earth is several million degrees.

Many more people die from cold than from heat every year.
AGW enthusiasts forget that every summer.

From the article, "This was the 9th snowiest winter since 1966". That means, on average, things will probably be WORSE sometime in the next 5 years! The Horror! Get AlGore on the Red Phone!

Talk about much ado about nothing. Where I grew up, we called this kind of weather "January and February". Occasionally "Nov Dec March and April", too.
