Android’s Iris, like Apple’s Siri, hates abortion
Death & Taxes ^ | 2/8/2012 | Andrew Belonsky

Posted on 02/08/2012 11:08:29 AM PST by knittnmom

Remember when Apple’s voice recognition app Siri refused to give directions to abortion clinics? Well, Verizon’s Android application Iris has the same socially conservative politics.

As Right Wing Watch and ThinkProgress report, little Iris also refuses to guide users toward abortion providers. But Iris goes one step further. While Siri simply refuses to give the information, Iris quotes the Bible to make her point.

“Abortion is wrong. The Lord has said ‘You shall not murder,’ (Exodus 20:13). The life that is growing within the mother is a child, a baby. The Bible looks at the life in the womb as a child,” Iris replies when asked whether abortion is wrong, and then ends with a cheery “Thanks!”

Asked “What makes abortion wrong,” Iris replies: “It takes away the right to live, to be happy, to be healthy…” The list goes on.

Right wingers like Family Research Council are celebrating Iris’ abortion opposition, but the rest of us — you know, the less draconian people who believe in a woman’s right to choose — are left to wonder why 21st century technology is so stuck in the 18th century.

There is nothing as obnoxious as a Liberal’s supercilious self-righteousness.

Yup. Personally, this would make me more inclined to pop for an Android.

It’s quite ironic that the author calls those you believe in life “Draconian”.

Maybe he should check a dictionary for the definition of Draconian:

1. of or relating to Draco, 7th-century Athenian statesman and lawmaker, or his code of laws, which prescribed death for almost every offence
2. harsh: draconian legislation

Yep nothing more “Draconian” than someone who can deny science and the knowledge that that is a human being you are killing.

One answer might be that Iris was designed in India by Indian contractors.

Perhaps Andrew Belonsky should stop being such a racist cultural chauvinist and recognize that mobile apps do not have to be designed solely for the tastes of rich, white elitists from the Northeast in order to have value.

I found this interesting..........

Unlike Siri, which gets its answers from a cocktail of Internet databases, such as Wolfram Alpha, Yelp, and Google, Iris is fed “information” directly from ChaCha, which is powered by what the company calls “Guides.” ChaCha pays, giving its “Specialist Guides” between $.10 and $.20 per answer, transcribers $.02 per question and “vetters,” who verify the answers, $.01 a pop. It might not sound like much, but given how easy the job is — and myriad YouTube videos confirm the simplicity of the job — guides claim to make somewhere in the $2 to $8 per hour range.

The training for these positions takes only a few hours and involves filling out a form, watching some videos, taking a “very easy” online test with database cheat sheet and submitting a tax form. After that, Guides work on their own schedules, answering away. “You can login whenever you want! You can login at 3 in the morning and answer questions.” Anyone can do it.

True but I know that occutards who are supporting Paul telling me I’m not as conservative as they are because I don’t support Paul comes pretty darn close in my book.

Now that I think about it, this kind of makes sense.

From Isaac Assimov. “The Three Laws of Robotics:”

1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.

Now, my preference would be the 10 Commandments and the Beatitudes, but there may be a simple explanation for the way Siri and Iris have been programmed.

Article author is less than knowledgeable....

The app is in the Android App store - and authored by a company called Dextera - the only connection Verizon may have to the app is selling devices capable of fetching the app from the Andriod store. To represent it as “Verizon’s Android application” is patently false.

Sucking the brains out of a baby whose head pops out of the mother is not draconian at all. It is such a civil event.

Trying to download it from the Android Market now, but no luck - keeps error-ing out on download.
‘course, it even says it’s Alpha software...probably be a while before they get all the bugs worked out.
